You may have seen this bike from some other posts. I know its "newer" being a 1998 Model,but let's face it i would get laughed out of the road forum.

So here we go, this sad looking Pug rolled into the coop a couple months ago..ok maybe it was summer when it came in. but either way. this bike came in with a torn up headset and missing seatpost seat,and wearing some beat up Matrix freewheel rims. it had looked like to been dragged behind a semi for 1000 miles,covered in dirt and road grime.

but what caught my eye was that fork.. then it was the lower/low end campagnolo on it. when it hit me that this was a newer Peugeot. now in the UK you might say...so what i cant throw a rock without hitting a Peugeot (maybe not). But in the US where Peugeot pulled out of the market in the early 1990's. this must have been brought over here to the US from UK. Im not sure about everyone else but i like that thought!

Anyways i have since bought it from the coop and have torn it down to the bare frame and will work on cleaning up and rebuilding it!

Chased the Bottom Bracket threads and faced the shell.

Sounds right it is a 60cm frame and it had a sticker from some haus on the Rhine, so that would help the Germany tie.

Thanks, I have hit a little snag as the campy headset i was going to use is a ISO Crown Race and it looks like this one is JIS (?). i will have to get the calipers out to measure, but thats what it looks like.

A quick update, have not been able to work on it much since im in the middle of moving, but i was able to get the crown race seat refaced and cut down to ISO from JIS. this way the headset is nice and clean and alot more choices in headsets!

Did you check the frame cavities for EPO...? Kidding, seriously your Peugeot cleaned up very nice, looks like a fun fast ride. Richard Virenque is going to think you stole his bike.

LOL.. i looked for some EPO but nothing there, rumor has it, that it magically appears at all border crossings and the whole bike becomes a needle when you get near the border of Belgium and France.

I have the exact same but the drivetrain is now dead and these original parts are unavailable… so I wanted to upgrade for a newer groupset but was wondering if it would be compatible with this frame?

Would a new Shimano 105 groupset work on this bike for example?

Hello and welcome to the forums. What exactly is 'dead' with the driverain? Hve you looked around on auction sites to see if you can find good condition used parts?

I suspect a 105 group would fit just fine provided you got the correct threading for the bottom bracket bearings.

Thanks for the kind words. they are nice bikes and really unique here in the states.

As for updating to a new 105 groupset . the points of concern i would say would be the Front Derailleur Clamp Size/Pull Direction. and the wheels/Cassette. if yours has the Campagnolo hubs still you will need to get new hubs as the campagnolo hubs will only take the 8 speed campy cassette (IIRC) .

The Rear Deraileur, Shifters, Bottom Bracket and Brakes shouldnt be a problem. and keep in mind the Headset is JIS standard not ISO so if you were planning on replacing keep that in mind.

Hello and thank your for the replies, I didn't expect such quick replies!

The dead parts are the triple Campagnolo Mirage crankset and the 8 speed Miche cassette (missing teeth). I wanted to replace these parts by new ones instead of good condition used ones in order not to have any bad surprises. It's also hard for me to tell if used parts are still in good condition, especially when the online pictures are not so good…

Unfortunately, new 8 speeds Campagnolo cassettes and triple Campagnolo cranksets don't seem to exist anymore. I was able to change the hub for a Shimano hub (I just unscrewed the old one and screwed back in a used 8 speeds Shimano hub) and add a new 8 speeds Shimano cassette but of course the indexing of this new cassette does not match the current Campagnolo 8 speed Mirage rear derailleur! So that means I need to find a new set of rear derailleur + shifters + crankset + front derailleur + bottom bracket…

So then I figured, why not just buy a whole new groupset (plus, idk why these replicas had all sorts of components from different Campagnolo groupsets (Avanti, Mirage, Veloce), my OCD doesn't like that…). So it looks like the current bottom bracket threading would be compatible with newer groupsets since it's a 1,370" x 24 which appears to be the modern standard if I'm not mistaken? But it also seems like all of the new road groupsets have 10, 11 or 12 speeds and I get the feeling these big cassettes won't fit this old Peugeot frame since my rear wheel is already almost touching the left side of the frame (as if this frame wasn't made for 8 speeds but rather 7 speeds?).

So then I figured, why not just sell this bike for parts and get a new bike? I fear that I will always have troubles with this bike because it's so old…

What are your thoughts? What would you do with it?
