Latex tubes bulge

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Latex tubes bulge

I just installed Vittoria 25-28 PV Latex tubes. During install I inflated one of the tubes some (before I put it in tire), and one little part of the tube bulged a bit. Like a four inch balloon bulge. I just let it deflate, installed in tires, inflated and rode for a few minutes on roller trainer. But I'm thinking, if a tube bulges like that before install, does that happen because there's a thin, weak part of the tube or defect? Should I continue riding or take out and return?

It's normal for latex tubes to do that if you overinflate them outside of a tire. Generally it's a good idea to put enough air into a tube on install that it wants to hold a round shape, but not so much that it stretches to very much larger than its uninflated form.

The spot on the tube that stretched most likely wasn't a defect, although it might have been weakened by the process of bulging, depending on how much it bulged.

That's helpful. Thanks!

Yeah... not unusual. Install and ride. if it holds air it's working.

Another vote for "that happens if you inflate them out of the tire".
