Where did you ride in Southern California today?

rode approx 15 miles to lunch to check out a chicken place. i don't need to go back. was largely unsatisfied with the total experience so added on
an additional 12-miler in the usual environs for cheap miles. not a great weather day by socal standards (overcast, windy, a little rain) but still, nice to be out.

still waiting for spring here in socal...

I Rode the Pacific Electric trail from Claremont to Fontana and back, just under forty miles.
A strong tailwind going east, and a pain in the butt headwind returning west.
Not very fond of windy days...

Yesterday was too windy for me to ride solo, 15 mph is my threshold, or 17 mph for the event I have already signed up.

Indeed, it was windy yesterday. I go to school in Long Beach (Lakewood Village), begin my commute in Huntington Beach near Newland and Warner and go through the Harbour en route. The winds were up to 25 MPH at times, but no rain. Summer break in a couple weeks...

Left the house at just the right time, got home at just the right time-- I rained most through the night and up until around 8am. When I rolled out at about 8:20, there was a little cloudbreak, and I managed to stay inline with it for most of the way. Got some sprinkles on my way down Riverside Ave, and a little more on Rialto Ave on the final leg toward home, but was otherwise dry. It's pouring down again now, started up about 30 minutes after I got home. Bike didn't even get that gross, much to my surprise. Wore the big, clodhoppin' Bontrager OMW boots, because every year older, my feet get even colder. My feet can go numb in the 40s. It's not great. So it was like wearing ankle weights, but my feet were warm!

I'm never a big fan of riding into the PCH North/West headwind after work.

That seems to be the typical wind pattern there, but the real pain in the butt are the expansion joints every fifteen feet or so.

a little 40-miler through most of cuyamaca rancho state park to and around julian and back. lots of flowers still out. just had to escape the may gray/june gloom on the coast. low 80’s and sunny up in the mtns with wind < 10 mph. a nice change. pit stop at nickel beer company in julian for a few ipa’s hit the spot.

No plans just started riding in them thar local hills of Whittier-La Habra Heights on the 29er. Ran into a local women's group once on Turnbull Canyon and again on West Rd. Little traffic and some overcast burning off to sunshine. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3715987275

Your activity is unviewable, btw.

Local women's group? Who might that be? My wife might be interested

Sorry, did not see a group jersey but they likely started in Whittier. I saw them once descending Turnbull on the Hacienda Heights side and again descending West Rd at Le Flore Drive. I did not find a local Meetup or bike shop group. They were group of about ten going at a pretty good clip. Next time I'll ask.

Oof! That's a lot of climbing. I haven't been up Turnbull in a while, I should drag my lazy butt over there.

la habra has some fun climbing but you already knew that. it's time for me to get back there for a smorgasbord of short, wiggly, punchy climbs.

Did someone say a lot of climbing? My house to Onyx Summit, then down and wrapped around University of Redlands to round up to an appropriate number. Once I got up into the 90s, any grade at all felt like I was on the mountain again. I barely managed 20 minutes in the saddle the following day.

I'd be interested to see some short climbs one day.

nothing like a little 34-35 mile climb to shake off the cobwebs and clear the whiskey fumes from the mind. kudos.

Nice ride! I was considering Onyx last Sat, but ~50% chance of rain was forecasted. I did Crystal Lake instead.

woke up early (for me) but literally laid around for two hours until i got slightly motivated. left the house around 12:15pm, rode thru balboa park and old town.
grabbed a coaster ticket but had 45 mins to kill. hit the round table pizza buffet then rolled back to the station and took the coaster to encinitas. casual ride from there
back home. hot day inland but coolish on the coast with the fog. pavement on the 101/coast highway through dtown encinitas really beat up with all the rain this year
so be extra careful for that half-mile stretch. rode the newish bike path from sorrento valley up to genesee and then took the really new link/bridge
from genesee onto the ucsd campus. they did a great job with that pathway. eventually linked up with the rose canyon bike path. the new one is just completed/paved
on the northern half but still closed...looks like they just need to seal it. that 5 fwy shoulder bike path segment may get taken down in the next week or two. rode thru
old town and balboa park again, then home.

looking to beat the heat and get high, got out of town and met up with fellow socal forumite Tycho Brahe at crystal lake.
dropped down from the store (only day closed? tuesdays of course), hung a right on ca hwy 39 and rode the 5+ mile closed section of the 39 to ach/ca hwy 2.
hung a right on ach/ca hwy 2 and rode up to dawson saddle, then descended to wrightwood for a quick munchie.
retraced our route from wrightwood back to crystal lake. not too windy with a little cloud cover so it was warm but not hot. pretty gorgeous day up there...an 8.5/10.
not sure Tycho Brahe actually broke a sweat...it was more like a ride along the beach path for him. 56+ miles with 6,600 or 7,000 feet of climbing, depending on whose computer you believe.
did stop about 2 miles east of dawson saddle on the way back to soak the footsies at one of the waterfalls.
definitely helped for the stretch run because the feet feel/felt like a champ. the legs? not so much.
only saw 5 other cyclists the entire way and traffic was super-minimal. ach/ca hwy 2 is still closed between the big tujunga turnoff and red box/mt. wilson so that discourages the commuting thru traffic.
busiest from wrightwood to vincent gap (lots of hikers out). the water was turned off at the campgrounds (maybe turned on for the weekends???) so if you go, hydrate well beforehand and take the
most water bottles you can reasonably carry. had to descend to wrightwood to refortify but the stretch from wrightwood to big pines is the steepest you'd encounter retracing the route.
probably wouldn't have descended to wrightwood if campground/visitor center water sources were flowing.
i still think the stretch of ach/ca hwy 2 from dawson saddle to big pines is the most scenic stretch of ach. it's a must-do.

recovery ride from yesterday's mountain-fest. a flattish 51 miles around metro san diego and dropping down to imperial beach,
up the silver strand to coronado, then the ferry back across to metro sd and a few more mellow miles.

https://www.strava.com/activities/2445509963

only went hard for about 15 minutes or so
heading north on silver strand bike path into the usual 3/4 headwind. felt good to push the big gear in the big ring vs spinning into the headwind
and may the push seat back a tiny bit based on a spur of the moment ride adjustment that seemed to work well.

Also looking to beat the heat yesterday, I did a very pleasurable ride from West Corona to Oceanside. The temps were perfect and once near the beaches the June gloom kept everything really nice. Stopped into Breakwater Brewery in Oceanside for grub and beer.

I was told it got to a high of 107 in the Coachella Valley, where I live.
