New Disc Trucker New New Color ?!

Much as I love my LHT, the factory paint was ugly. Surly called it Khaki, but it looked like baby diarrhea brown. I finally took it to a local powder coating facility and had it stripped and redone in a metallic red.
It baffles me why Surly always choose such hideous colors. Anybody here have a theory?

I rattle-can paint my fixed gear every couple of years. $5 for a can!. Always looks good! After a few scuffs & chips it's time for a new color.

[QUOTEhaving a variety of colors and sizes stocked in the warehouse would add to the cost you would have to pay..
Go full custom and you have more options..][/QUOTE]
I'm not asking for multiple colors, just that they choose more appealing colors in general. And I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but recent surly LHT and Disc Truckers only come in garish undesirable colors.
Is there a way of ordering the bike custom from Surly?

Well I kinda like it. There I said it. Ha Actually it is no uglier than many of Surly's previous color schemes they have come up with over the years. I've never understood why they can't give their frames a better paint job. It can't be that much more expensive and lord knows they're now asking enough for their complete bikes that they could afford a metallic paint job, maybe in a deep British emerald green. (if you're listening out there Surly)

Just order the frameset and have your lbs build it up the way you desire, but I'm pretty sure you can't obtain custom frameset dimensions from Surly. Would have to involve a custom frame builder and there are several good ones around the country that could do that for you.

Truckers are routinely offered in more than one color - usually leftovers from last year, new stock from this year, plus LHT has been available in black for several (8?) years.
Black works well for LHT for traditional tourer builds with silver fenders/cranks/rims/components/etc. It's not difficult to make a fairly decent-looking repair to frameset finish damage with ubiquitous black paint. Also you can swap in a black Disc Trucker (DT) fork for improved wet braking with only half the weight increase in a DT's disc brakes. You probably get 70% of your braking from the front brake, so disc brake in front only can make a real difference. I did this on my LHT years ago. IIRC, DT has never been offered in black.

Saw one of these in person at an LBS this past weekend (alas, too small to test ride and it was already bought and paid for anyway). The color is much more attractive in person IMHO, although I don't hate it in photos either unlike some of you.

My bike just made it to America! I like the color!
My bag color choice is not as pleasing as many might like, but it should be visible...
rides like a dream. The tires are big, though...46mm.

^^^That doesn't look at bad as the color does in the photo in post #3 .^^^ But lighting can be funny. The first photos i took of my road bike when I brought it home make it look bluish in hue when it's really greenish.

Or build it up yourself. It's not rocket surgery.

Maximum braking force is pretty much achieved solely by the front brake as the rear wheel lifts off.

It's official: the new DT will be offered in black. The Surly website now lists it as an available color and you can see a picture of the bike in "Hi-Viz Black".

Had both colors been available when I bought mine, I still would have still bought the green without hesitation at all. That said, I am biased. I dislike black as a bike color.
