Alpina Sport

I found an Univega Alpina Sport on C/L... thought it was a roadie (can't find any info on this model ), but got there to find it was a mtb with 26 inch tiresand and rigid construction. I have a lung disease, and am planning on adding a motor for my 14.25 mile (28.5 r/t) commute in So. California Desert. With a up and down near home to climb, two miles about 600+ feet then back down the other side...)I have made it a few times, but feel I need some extra oomph. I was pleasantly surprised to find the bike was 26in. wheels as this will allow me to convert it, so it followed me home!! It is "purple splatter paint", appears original as the decals are mostly there, the top tube has the "Sport" partially worn away. "Spo" on one side "ort" on the other. This Alpina Sport's decals indicate a "double butted" CrMo Tange Prestige frame. another CrMo decal on the rear triangle. I will replace the knobbies with kevlar lined roadier tires, it already has tire liners, and thicker tubes to remedy the goatheads (horrible monstrous things that prey on tires.) The only real problem with the bike is the bottom bracket needs replacing so it is with the LBS to have a going over/tune up and get the bracket replaced. There was some play in it. he said the derailleur looked okay. Other than a mess of road grime it has weathered fairly well. I paid $35 for the bike and $25 for the BB I won't count the ($65) maintenance/tune up as I figure I would have that on any bike. ('till I get some better working knowledge of bike mechanics to do my own.)
Front crankset is flat black metal traction pedals on 175mm cranks with 48/38/28 Shimano Biopace sprockets. I took off the toe sling thingies, as too weird for me. Rear wheel sports "Mountain LX" or some such Shimano derailleur managing the 7 sprockets. I have no idea what the tooth counts are on them yet. The Vetta saddle needs to be recovered or replaced with a new softer (for my 46 y.o. fat arse) saddle. And finally I would like to replace the handle bars which are currently MTB style, nearly straight across, with something else. I am leaning towards the classic ten speed style (with drops?, is that what the curved under ends pointing rearward are called or are drops the arm rests that road racers use often?) as I remember those as really versatile for changing position, but, may try to find a comfort style with a rise... I DO like all the pics on here of the taped bars, but don't think white would stay nice looking for long, can't see black on em, and don't think the purple splatter paint job would lend itself well to the tan leather look. If you've read this far, thank you! Sorry to drone, and promise to post pics as soon as I get it back from the LBS tomorrow or the next. If anyone can offer any more info on this bike, it would be much appreciated.

Oh and I guess the model can be added to the "list"

Also, should I repaint this Alpina Sport...

Should I repaint the Alpina Sport, or leave it alone and preserve the decals and such? I kinda imagine a nice shiny black or red or gray or... uh... well, ANYTHING but this puked up purple splatter... Would repainting it be antithematic? Any way to get decals replaced If I did repaint? Pretty much a waste of time and effort? Live with it, it'll grow on me?

You can reserve judgement till I get it back and get some pics posted of it.

Thanks,
mrlassiter

I bought this univega off of craigslist for 30 bucks. it rides amazing, is super smooth but ive had the hardest time trying to find information on it.
It's a univega Custom Maxima. the number stamped under the BB is L272218.
it has araya 27' wheels, custom cranks, shimano shifters and shimano brakes. the seat that was on there said "jazz" but im thinking that might have been another seat added in the years.
I bought it to convert it to add to my singlespeed family but it's just too nice to even touch. i took off the original bar tape ( a dark blue/ navy blue tape) and added the white, but i kept the old tape, because as i said, it's just a really beautiful bike and anything that comes off it goes into a storage box. Seriously i feel it's sacriligious to do anything to it.

Just picked this baby up last night ('78ish Gran Rally) and rode it to work today. It needs new hoods and maybe a saddle... any suggestions?

This is my ratty old Neuvo Sport that was given to me. Kind of heavy but a good all all arounder. Little worries about it getting stolen (unlike my carbon Trek that got pinched a couple years ago). I have built up a Superstrada/Campy for cyclotouring that I am quite happy with. Pictures to follow.

I just picked up a Univega Gran Turismo the other day and was wondering if anybody could give me some specs on it. It needs new tires and wheels and I'm sure a load of other things that I can't tell since I've never really owned a bike that wasn't from walmart. I'm considering converting it into an everyday commuter bike, possibly replacing the handle bars with some nitto albatross handbars, and putting on 700c rims/tires that are a bit wider and can be used all season.
I know this probably kills some traditionalists, but I think it would make for a more comfortable commute and I am definitely open to any/all suggestions and help.

It looks great! How is the paint in person? I think it might be hard to get $260 for it but if you kept the saddle (I'm assuming that is where the money is) and adjusted accordingly I think it would be worth what you've got into it.

it has a few scratches, and i have thought of repainting it but still has the sticker of the bike shop that it was purchased from. the seat still around. but is is not a gran turismo but a gran premio. i paid five bucks on a yard sale but the 250 has been spent on rims seathoods and tape. should i repaint or not.
i will try to take a few picks with a camera and not with my cell phone.

I've mostly ridden mountain bikes my whole life. Last week I thought I might like to get a used road bike for around town. I went to Klunk, which is a great used bike shop here (https://www.klunkcycles.com), and found an '83 (I believe) Supra Sport. It looked to be in great shape, with new tires, grips, shifting cables, etc. It's a 63 cm frame, which, even with my long legs, gives only a little standover clearance. But it fit fine on a ride, and I instantly took it home. Over the last 3 days alone I've logged dozens of miles around town. I love this bike. It's fast, sturdy, and a very smooth ride. I'll post pics when I can.

One of Three

Older nuovo sport. I love the older upgrades GRAB ON red foam grips, a Cateye Mity2 computer. As a Bonus i have owners manual for bike and computer. At 54 cm seat tube x 54 cm top tube its too small for me. I got it from original purchaser who forgot when he bought it. i am thinking about selling via CL. (unless someone here is interested) anyone know what to ask for it. (i am in the Boston area. a not from wal-mart bike CL's for over $120) or should i hang it on my wall ala Seinfeld?

My First Univega!

Red and White! Nuovo Sport. big 63 cm c to top/ 57 cm center to center top tube. original everything but tires. Full Shimano setup. SIS shift. side pull brakes. platform pedals. basic. entry level. i love it.

Drivetrain, brake pads and seat show no wear at at all.

the price $0. previous owner had literally thrown it away without using it. the scrapes of green paint are from the "roll off" it was found in after home upgrades. photos all taken before cleaning.

Blue and white "beater"

(SOLD October 14, 2007)Most of my rides are on this 59 cm c-t, 56 c-c top tube 'arrowpace'. nice white saddle needed as the black is awful... but so is the black stem... Shimano SIS shift. Sakae cranks. Diacompe brakes and levers... another fun riding, entry level bike. and it shows with all the grease and grime. added wal-mart schwinn computer, Bontragger SelectK Gumwall tires, NR light pair, wellgo toeclip platforms and a cheap zefal bottle cage . soon to wrap bars with fi'zi:k microtex.

I stole Lamplight's idea of putting Honjos on my Univega. Thanks for the idea, Lamplight.

So, yes, I now have more invested in the fenders than I do in the bike.

I am going to put a rack on the back and this will now be my daily commuter -- after a couple of shakedown rides I'm putting my Trek 520 up for sale. Am going to ride all winter as is and then put bar-end shifters on it and (likely) change out the Biopace chainrings. (Changes to date: new tires, tubes, brake cables, brake pads, stem, handlebar tape, brake levers, brake hoods).

What kind of rear rack should go on this?

This fall/winter my normal commuting load - Arkel commuting pannier, laptop, papers, change of clothes.

Next spring/summer I hope to do at least one overnight credit card tour w/"real" touring panniers.

I have an old aluminum rack I got off another 80's bike that I started bending into shape this morning, and I think it might work. Nice retro look. I've also looked at a Tubus Luna -- very cool but pricey ($176) -- and not quite the look I was going for (as if looks matter...).

I was going to tell you that I have a Nitto Campee rack I was considering selling, but I'm not sure it would be especially good for commuting since it mounts the pannier down so low. It might get old having to bend down so far to get your stuff out of the pannier. But I will say this: Nitto makes a fine rack! If you don't mind spending the money, I would highly recommend them. They look good on old bikes, too.

Baby

This is my baby. I adopted her in the early 80's, new. I think the adoption fee was around $350.00. She got me down the Baja Peninsula, and up the Canadian Rockies.
