S24O on the North Trask

Many forum members have done the North Trask ride, a hard, beautiful, wonderful ride from Portlandia to Tillamook via forestry roads.
2016 version
2017 version
Call out to @Andy_K, @northbend, @andy_p, @BicycleKitty who was profiled doing this ride on TV:
), @jyl, Mr. @Velocivixen, @cdj, @aggiegrads, @johnnyace, and @79pmooney as some of the riders from those epic years.

This ride almost certainly requires figuring out a way back from Tillamook "back home", unless...

There's a swimmin' hole at the halfway point. I've always thought it would make a wonderful campsite. So Steve, his son Luke and myself left Monday in the afternoon and rode from Yamhill, up The Hill, through the woods, and did the slalom run to the campsite. We figured Monday evening would ensure us that no one else would be there - which turned out to be correct. Social distancing was easy.

But pix, you say.

The Hill is a long, steep, loose gravel hill. We stopped several times to rest our bikes and let them cool off

Dad shows son the ropes, or in this case, the gate.

Slaloming down a favorite section

Lots of this

View from our camp's front porch

Steve's stock Page Street, Luke's custom Igleheart

The bar is open

Yep

Headed back to Yamhill

Nearly 5 hours to get to the campsite, a little more than 3 hours to return. That hill is a duesy!

Seeing these pictures makes it clear to me that I made a mistake by not ditching work to do this ride. The memory of how I felt by the time we got to Tillamook the year I did the ride offers some reassurance that it wasn't a terrible mistake.

Just from a ride down the road at home tonight only 6km's. It helps me reactivate muscles and recovery after a long Sunday ride.

Yes, I ordered it a few months after the ride and took delivery in February 2018.

It was the perfect bike for this trip.

The Hill is still terrible. Stopping in the few shady spots to cool down helped out. Walking the steeper sections kept the momentum going forward. I was very worried about going up the slalom run, but it's not quite as steep as I thought it would be, it's definitely much shorter than The Hill, it's mostly covered by trees, and doing it in the cool morning made it almost pleasurable. Going down the hill, you're probably best off with disk brakes.

It's still early in the season, another run could be scheduled...

At one time it was an Agricultural Corridor, but I think Recreational is correct.

Now it's just a 'short-cut' to the more congested corridors.
The gravel trucks can make it intimidating.

@gugie organizes the best rides :-)

I admire him for that as I have terrible organizational skills.
It doesn’t take much planning when the weather is nice to go somewhere close and ride in the mountains.
Wednesday was forecasted to be hot and sunny.

A call the day before to my friend Ty, suggesting a route known locally as the “TripleByPass” and an early start time and we’re good to go.
In the morning I pack a few sandwiches, make sure the bike is in good order and drive down to the East entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park where I meet him at the foot of Stevens Canyon Road.

It’s chilly at the start but that doesn’t last long as we start off immediately with a 13 mile / 3200 foot climb up Cayuse and Chinook Passes.

Climbing Chinook by Matthew Pendergast, on Flickr

Tipsoo Lake near the summit of Chinook Pass was clear of snow, 3 weeks ago when I last rode up here it was still covered in snow.

We drop down off Chinook Pass, in the big ring for the next 45 miles. It’s downhill all the way into the heat of Eastern Washington.

The long descent off of Chinook Pass by Matthew Pendergast, on Flickr

Highway 410 ends when we reach US 12 a few miles outside the town of Natches. The heat radiating off the pavement was registering 97 degrees on Ty’s Garmin. But as we turned West on US 12 we now had a pretty good headwind which I didn’t mind at all. It helped cool things down.

We went through water like crazy. Fortunately, there as several small groceries along the way and I think we stopped at each one of them to replenish.

Descending the backside of White Pass we see our mountain again, we are almost done!

One last uphill back to the cars and we are done and I was cooked.

That’s a great ride Matt. I remember the Rimrock grocery and very blustery weather at the White Pass summit around this time last year. You PNW guys are doing some great riding!

I went out for one of my standard routes on my new to me Ritchey Breakaway. Looking forward to some travel adventures with this one day ....

It’s OK to talk to yourself on long solo rides. Problems are when you start believing the other half of the ‘dialogue’.

ex: hot summer day, not an early riser, who tells himself it oughtta be epic. Maybe not listen to the devilish side that says go-all-out. .....caution might

Oooopps - we passed that point a few posts back, didn’t we - eh?
Never mind.
Carry on.

NYC heat & humidity kept me from any long rides since mid June. Today was forecast to be cooler day and my meetings schedule was unusually light so I took a day off and rode to Coney Island. Not as epic as the adventures above, but a good 45 mile outing nonetheless.

All quiet at Luna Park

Brooklyn waterfront

Greetings from Eastern Parkway

Great memories! Going down the backside of White Pass, taking turns spinning out and passing each other on a no-brakes required downhill made me feel like a kid again. Watching Jim G. having one or two too many beers in Natches, sending him into "I love you guys" mode, priceless.
