Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any Cool Places To Ride In San Diego, California?

Visiting San Diego next month for a work trip. I'm only gonna be there for the Weekend, Fri-Mon and brining my road bike of course. I wanted to try and get a few early morning rides in and was curious if anyone can share some pretty solid routes, in or outside the city that are safe for riding. I was looking for a Rapha CC but their only in Los Angeles and I won't be up that far north. If anyone is also down to join me for a ride that would be awesome too. I get in Friday so I'll most likely get a ride on Saturday morning with a 6:30 - 7 am start.

Balboa Park. Check out all the museums while you're there, too.

Ride from Torrey Pines up to Oceanside pier. It's an awesome ride along 101 and you get some great beach views.

Mission Bay to Old Town. There are many bike paths in this area and some are really nice. Joe joesvintageroadbikes.wordpress

If you’re staying downtown, the ride out Harbor Dive to Point Loma/Ocean Beach area is really nice. You can loop around the headland, or go up Nimitz straight through to Mission Bay/Pacific Beach area all the way up to La Jolla.

You can ride Kearny Villa Rd through the middle of Miramar air base and see how many F18s buzz right over your head.

couple of questions for the op...

1. what part of town are you staying in san diego?

2. what do you want to ride? rollers? flats? hills? mountains? most scenic? a mix?

3. how comfortable are you cycling with/in traffic? san diego's not exactly as crazy as la but it has its' share of dicey intersections/moments of truth.
more of a bike paths person, ex-bike messenger or somewhere in between?

4. access to a car and comfortable driving it?

5. you mentioned early morning rides but dunno if the weekend allows for later riding. only really asking because the mexican food and craft beer scene
here in sd is off the charts. it would be a pity not to partake if that's potentially your thing.

answer to the original question is yes.

If you have time to go up to Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial in La Jolla that would be a fun ride. You can see all of San Diego from the top and there are several ways to get up there. The steepest route along Hidden Valley Road and Via Capri on the north side is probably one of the steepest one-mile stretch of road in San Diego. The other routes on the west and south sides are easier to go up but not as much fun coming down.

I second this ride. Fun way to explore the coast and La Jolla is a fantastic place to hang out.

Mt. Soledad is a little bit of a climb but nothing major. Most of the ride is flat as a pancake all 1000' of this ride was the climb up to Mt. Soledad.

if you only have time for one ride, Sojodave in post #3 nailed it. from the ucsd/la jolla area, it's 60+ miles there and back.
from dtown san diego. it's 80+ miles.

there's also this:

https://www.bikeforums.net/southern-...epository.html

(^posts #3 and #19 but they generally involve driving from metro san diego).

post #3 in the socal repository has you hitting 6,000 feet along the ride and above 5,000 feet for significant stretches.
that ain't happening in the empire state and is pretty hard to come by on the right coast. not hard to find on the left coast.
it's my fave ride in sd county and highly recommended.

In the La Jolla area, if you want a ride that is rolling and NONSTOP (101/Torrey Pines has a crapload of lights), go inland towards Elfin Forest Road/Harmony Grove. Look up the Swami's Cycling Saturday ride route.

Did the OP get banned earlier this week for promoting his business on this site ?
I suppose that's why he hasn't given us more details about his upcoming trip.
I'm a newbie so I still don't know how things work around here.

gradually then suddenly. don't feel bad if someone "uses" your commentary w/o reciprocation/acknowledgement.
for every entity that asks, there are 3-5 lurkers/stealthers/vampires/permo-banned/gravel riders that digest and subsist on any info you disseminate.
once in a while, you get a forumite that truly appreciates your effort and actually posts as such and makes it all worthwhile.
don't let it bring you down, it's only castles burning,
