Bullhorn bar conversion on mtb to gravel bike

I am looking to either get bar ends onto my xc/ gravel bike or bullhorns. I have a couple concerns. First off, I'm concerned that putting bar ends on my 780 mm bars would feel wide and awkward. Secondly, most bullhorn bars, including ones that fit my 31.8 mm stem clamp, seem to be in the 400-440 mm range. Would this be too skinny to keep control on my 29er? The other thing is im planning on keeping my existing slx hydraulic brakes and shifters. Is it fine to mount them on the tops of the bars, rather than having to buy specific bullhorn components?

Thanks,
Jimi

Have you looked into Velo Orange Crazy Bars, or perhaps the Surly Moloko Bar?

They'd let you mount your existing cockpit on wide grips for MTB-like control, while also providing bullhorn-like postures.

Ill defiantly look into them, thanks for the help!

Edit: I like the varied hand positions they seem to offer, however the sweep on the bars might throw off my posture and weight might be a concern.

Would putting drop extensions inside the brakes on the bars be a decent option. I would plan on getting a longer stem and more angled saddle to compensate for it.

Bosco bullhorn

Hey, just a suggestion: you could look into flipping some cruiser or city-bike style bars..
I recently got a pair of Bosco bars from Rivendell and have had good luck flipping them around once in a while to switch my old raleigh from Dad Mode into Rad Mode. Suuuuper wide bullhorns, the flare feels weirdly comfortable.

Not too common. Do you prefer shifting with your left thumb?

I'm ok either way.

This is the left over FD shifter from another build, an 84 Diamondback Ridgerunner. I also made it 1x.

When I tried to mount it (the FD shifter) on the KHS on the right the lever went the wrong way, which was awkward so I mounted it where it wanted to go on the left.
