Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Think you're having lousy weather this summer...? 57 F in July!

The University of Washington Atmospheric Sciences Department keeps a minute-by-minute log of the weather station atop their roof on the Seattle campus.

The mission: Find out how many minutes it's been at 80 degrees or warmer this year-- what I would call a true warm summer day in Seattle. The answer: 78 minutes.

Or, breaking it down: 12 minutes on July 2, and 66 minutes on July 6.

...

It turns out, we've had a whopping 18 hours and 48 minutes of temperatures above 75 this summer -- hey, it's more than 2/3rd of a day! Never mind that some cities like Dallas haven't been below 75, day or night, since June 23rd.

My rain bike has been coming out to protect my nice bike's drive train.

Same in Chicago. I have to start running back on the treadmill because I can't carry the same amount of water on my runs...

I feel ya man, I'm just south of you in Oregon and it aint much better. I was up there last weekend visiting a friend of mine and it rained the whole weekend, which wouldn't have been to unexpected but the news had said it was gonna be 83 and dry!!!!! I know, I know....since when did anyone trust the weather man. But there is a BIG difference between 83 and dry and 65 and rain. If I were to be THAT wrong consistantly at my job, I could expect getting fired quickly. I went out on a mid morning ride yesterday and had to wear light arm warmers and knee warmers....WTF!???

This summer sucks....

My wife and kids are in Iowa and she called me yesterday saying they went to some theme park and said they had to take a break since it was 100+ when considering the humidity and such

The Vancouver, BC weather this year blows too... Got a new bike and couldn't ride it for 3 days due to rain; wasn't willing to let it get soaked on it's first ride.

I too am from the Seattle area and flew to Iowa last night. Getting off the plane was quite a shock to the system. This morning's attempt at a ride was not too successful. RAGBRAI next week may be a bit brutal.

No ... and July is 2/3 over. Mind you, we didn't get a bad couple weeks, it's been like this since last October, more or less. The only thing that's changed much is the day length.

Thankfully today's one of the cooler days here in NY (85F, feels like 90F). I can't wait to get home and hop on the saddle and ride hard for the 1.5 hours of sunlight left before pitch black.

Sorry to hear that my fellow Washingtonian. The weather on the east side of the state has been beautiful.

But just to make you feel better:

+1. Over 35 days of 100+ highs in Austin, and one of the worst droughts on record. OTOH, we have been able to ride quite a bit. Just have to start REALLY early or roast.

57 is about my ideal riding temperature. I'm jealous.

I'd just like you all to know that after starting this thread, the sun came out and the mercury climbed all the way into the 70s. We've had more sun on my lunch break than we have in the past week. Thanks, road forum!

I probably wouldn't be able to keep my job if I traded apartments with you. If it was as warm here as where you live, I'd be taking brief dips in the lake. Maybe even in the middle of a ride!

I would take 90 any day over 57. It was the same ugly foggy cold weather here in the bay area as well..

I live in the Seattle area too. It's just that day after day after day after day of cloudy, 50ish degrees, and probably raining gets to you eventually. I moved up here from Florida thinking it wouldn't be so bad since it doesn't get super cold.

I've put up with it for almost 4 years now, but I just can't take it. In the end, I'll probably move to Southern Cali and get the best of both worlds: great weather and awesome riding.
