Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

As your feet come up point them downwards, as they go down they should be flat.

Some people point their toes down throughout their stroke. I am one of them.

  1. Keep your head up.
  2. Don't tense your shoulders so much.
  3. Bend your elbows.
  4. The bouncing in your upper body is a symptom of a jerky stroke. Work to smooth that out.

I definitely notice I'm not a smooth on the upstroke as I am on the down, I guess I'm a masher.

What about seat height/knee angle?

Have you been doing any one leg drills or high cadence drills? They can really help you smooth out your spin.

It would help if you would slow down as in this one.

It's a little blurry in the video, but I'd guess your saddle is maybe a little low.

My thought too, the saddle looks a little low. Raise it up a bit an give it an spin.

With your toes pointed down throughout the stroke like that, it will make your saddle seem lower. Try flattening your foot near the bottom of the pedal stroke and you'll get a little more leg extension without raising your seat. Also, try to get a shot from head-on so we can see your knee tracking.

Some people pedal with their toe down, some pedal with a level foot. I assure you, it is much easier to raise the saddle a little than to try to change the way you pedal when it comes to toe down.

yeah, you already mentioned your toe-down pedaling.

There's a reason I mentioned knee tracking. When you keep your toes pointed down, you are actually flexing the ankle throughout the pedal stroke. Since the ankle's two joints are not perfectly square to the body's major axes, this causes torsion in the leg. Since the foot's camber is fixed at the pedal, this force shows up as a lateral wobble at the knee. It's more stressful on hip and knee joints and less efficient.

Please show proof to it being less efficient. Quite a few very successful riders (including some Lance guy) pedal toe down.

Proof? Draw a freaking vector diagram starting at the hip and work your way down.

404, bottom of pedal stroke not found. His left leg is already beginning an upstroke and his right leg is exactly where it should be. Notice the constant 90 angle in the ankle joint.

Search other pictures of him, you will find that he pedals toe down. Only time I find him with a flat foot is during turns.

this took exactly 2 seconds to find:

his down foot is flattened. This differs from the OP's video where his feet stay at an almost constant angle to the ground.
