Did 36 miles out to Mill Valley and then around China Camp on the Miyata. It was supposed to be a bit of a shake down ride, but all was going so well I stretched it out a bit!

25 miles today, east of Ventura, headed to Santa Paula, CA. Big time wind, but I had hoped to miss most of it. We had a good ride up thru two canyons, Aliso and Wheeler, then the wind hit us. Low gear, just keeping upright forward motion. I cut the ride short, and passed by the Limoneira Lemon processing plant, where there are some cool workers housing units. Caught a nice tailwind home, had the '78 Peugeot PR10 whistling along at 25 mph, without much effort. All in all a good day on the bike, if shorter than I had planned.
Lots of dust and debris blowing around.

A spur-of-the-moment adventure...
I went for a longish (for me) ride yesterday. I intended to do about 50 miles. I started out on a typical ride north, up Sheridan Road through Highland Park and Fort Sheridan, down Old Elm to the Skokie Valley Bike Path, ending at IL Route 176. I stopped to have a snack. This sign awaited me:
I've always turned right to Lake Bluff. I wondered, "What might be in the Libertyville direction?" I was thinking perhaps a little loop north then east. I checked Google Maps. Turns out I was pretty close to the Des Plaines River Trail. I'd never ridden any of it, so I made a spur-of-the-moment decision to give it a whirl. It all started off well:

I had to actually ride a half mile or so on IL Route 60 in Vernon Hills to get around the underpass closure. That should have been my first clue to turn around, but I forged on. Back on DPRT from the canoe launch, I got a good look at how full the Des Plaines River is right now. On the left is a pond which is often disconnected from the river. There is also a small dam under there somewhere:
Just after that, I encountered this:
No getting past that, so I backtracked and rode Milwaukee Avenue, then dove back in at Woodlands Pkwy in Half Day (there is a path/sidewalk on the west side of the street, so not as hair-raising as Route 60).

It's State Fair of Texas time in Dallas.
I got in 40 miles riding to and from the fair on another warm day that hit 90 degrees by late afternoon.
It was a hot return trip on my Trek 950 #2 .
However overnight that big cold front finally arrived and it was 42 degrees this morning with expected highs of 59 to 60 or so.
It's a relief to think that was my last hot ride until next year.
I did not take many pictures but offer these
so so pics including Mr P. W. Herman's red much accessorized Schwinn and Chewbacca's mask and a poorly framed Big Tex pic.
Gosh, Peter Mayhew was 7'2"!
He lived in Texas in his later life
and was featured in the noted Texas film/actors/actresses in film exhibit.

Took 2 twenty mile laps using two bikes. Merckx is heaven, Frejus is a quandary, definitely not a drop bar bike, maybe it’ll work with mustache bars. Maybe.

I was concentrating on the ride of the Frejus - which will not be a good drop bar roadie for me, given super short top tube. Frame is 62X55.25cm ctc. Maybe a more upright 'city' ride with moustache bars?
Anyway - by th time I registered the hodown-lowdown signal, all that caught my eye was a most un-vintage looking cassette as you slid by. Shoulda stopped. Wave again next time, for a quick turnaround getogether. Guaranteed i'm almost always ready to stop 'n smile.

Summer left Chicago in a hurry. 40 degrees when I rolled out the door today. 12-20 mph wind gusts and a seemingly constant headwind. Determined to keep the season going until the first snow, so I did 54 miles up north of the city.
