Team Raleigh Record (Reynolds 531) Identification

I'm looking into acquiring this raleigh. Anyone have anything constructive to bring to the table.

Reynolds 531 frame & fork. Flat fork crown.
Campy drop outs with eyelids.
Combination of shimano 600 & suntour drive train
and 'Some french and italian components'
Worksop built.

Still waiting on serial number and other details.

I've done some reading and it may be a 70's French Record. Can anyone attest to this?

Mine has #8006368 and came with a complete shim600 group. The Record is a European market model comparable to the Raleigh comp GS without the chromed stays, as I understand. Was available in non-teamcolors too. I like to ride this bike, it's reasonably light and very flexible, by far the most comfortable racing-bike I have.

Jeff, there was a "Team Raleigh" ,, near the top. The "Team Raleigh Record" at least in the USA was a lot closer to the lesser "Record", except the team paint job set it apart. Chris

Can you define Team Replica? As per CMAW's comments it looks to be more like a Competition GS (drop out eyelits, etc) than a Team Professional.

The threads that I read suggested a European market Record. It's great to see your bike as it is very comparable. Also shows me what it will look like minus the mustache bars.

Have you ever come across any literature for these frames? Catalogs? Flyers?

I don't think this bike is at all comparable to the North America market Record. This bike is Worksop built with reynolds 531, suggesting it is a much higher quality.

... by the way, I gave a deposit on the bike. My father will facilitate pickup as its not in my area. $225, and he's providing the matching record front hub.

There's a website dedicated to Team Raleighs. Used frames vary in price, I've seen them fairly cheap to outrageous, so they're not that exotic, but they're certainly appreciated.

They"re available from English C&V-sites but I don't remember which one. The Record was the fourth model top down, I think, lower high end or whatever you like to call it. Team colors we're available for most models, including the cheapest. These are not rare, they go for 80 to 150 euro on Ebay over here. That's all I know - besides it being a super-comfy ride. Interestingly, I bought mine from a guy who lived in a village on the Belgo-German border; since the serial# are only 9 apart, chances are our bikes spent time together in a German warehouse or something. OK, maybe not that interestingly.

Thanks, I'll see if I can track anything down. Let me know if you come across anything.

I slacked and never posted photos of my raleigh. Not the prettiest example, but i've been really enjoying the ride. I've almost completely rebuilt it, mostly with parts I had around the house. The intent was to make it look like Team Replica.. from 10ft away. She's now my daily commuter.

Thx JYL. I should rephrase, it's my fair weather commuter. I have a carlton with upright bars and fenders that gets riden when its raining.

The pump is a tad small, and wasn't holding itself in place all that well, so I improvised...

Might try rotating the bottom 180 degrees which moves it up a little at the foot. At least, works with Silcas...

For anyone who's interested, here's and exert from the 74' British Raleigh catalog. While the 74' model came with only 531 main tubes, I believe mine is full 531 based on the fact that I have 531 decals on the fork blades...

1979 Raleigh Team Record

Just a heads up, there is a really sweet example of the European Team Record on the Boston Craigslist right now, short money for the quality of these team bikes and this one is Cyclone!

Raleigh Team bikes

From the early 1970s the Raleigh Team bikes were made by the Specialist Bicycle Development Unit (SBDU). They were generally made of 753 Reynolds tubing and are extremely rare. They won many major stages and even tours and as such sell for many thousands. Before that there was Record Ace or something or other and they are even rarer. SBDUs serial numbers only go up to 10000.
If you ride one of these frames in good condition it is immediately clear they are a different breed when comes to responsivness. It is like a carbon frame 40 years before carbon came along.
Raleigh used the prestige of the SBDUs to sell millions of bikes to Joe Public sporting various lively alluding to the Works bikes. The 531 bikes are all good solid bikes that seem to last forever. In Europe they usually sell in original patina for under 200 USD even with Campag bits and bobs.

Highlighting the relevant comment here for newcomers, given that this thread and is not about the SBDUs, but the European-market Raleigh Team Record replica (lest someone overpay for a Team Record believing it's an SBDU bike - or try to flip it for SBDU money).

I have a 1978 Dec made 531 Professional with all Campy Nuovo gear.
I Bought it for $50 and have repainted it and added some NOS nuovo gear and keeping good condition gear on it.
Im assembling it this week.
And yes I know I have Victory brakes levers (I had a pair of Near new and I like them)
and I replaced the derailers with newer ones.
