Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Rode a bit today. Nice and warm but windy as all hell! A little drizzle too here and there. Went to go get a hair cut and snapped this pic with my phone of the steed locked up on the sidewalk.

the ghost bike makes me cringe. I ride past a ghost bike from a death I was at a year ago and it makes me ill.

The stock fork had a rake of 43mm; this one has a 44mm rake. So ride really doesn't change much at all.

After looking at so many elegant bikes here, I'll submit my more jackleg version for your perusal. I had bought an old Raleigh mountainbike for 50 bucks a while back with the intention of putting studded tires on it and using it for my snow bike. Not too surprisingly the components turned out to be crap, and not wanting to spend too much more money I sawed off the shifter mounts, stripped it down, fixed it up with some left over parts, and some new paint and cork grips. Originally it had a tensioner and was 36x16 but I didn't like the look of the tensioner and the gear was too small. I was very fortunate to find when I mounted a 14 cog that the chain fit almost perfectly with the vertical dropouts. The 67 inch gear is just right for the rolling terrain here, and I find this is now my favorite bike. I am about 98% car-free and have been using this bike almost exclusively, it's such fun to ride. It's also surprisingly quiet, a feature I didn't expect.

Here's my new fg/ss. I've only ridden the fixed gear side so far. It's a generic bike from Nashbar. On sale for $304, so I couldn't resist! Even though some of the bike is CHEAP, it was an excellent value. The frame gives me a supple ride and a comfortable position. I've been replacing the components. For instance, the pedals are 25 year old classic French pedals. It came with heavy tires and rims, and I've replaced the tires. I changed the rear sprocket to something larger, to give me a lower gear, so now my freewheel and fixed sprocket are of different sizes.
