9 speed derailleur compatibility

I'm replacing an Shimano Ultegra RD-6500 SS rear derailleur. I understand Ultegras are all 11-speed now, but I'm not looking to replace the whole drivetrain right now. With that in mind, I'm trying to decide which is my best option:
  1. Used Dura-Ace RD-7700, which as I understand it is the last version they made for 9-speed.
  2. New Sora RD-R3000, which as far as I can tell is the best current generation model that Shimano makes in 9-speed.
  3. Used Ultegra RD-6500, just replace with the exact same part.

Can anyone shed some light on which option is preferable? Or any other 9-speed compatible options I'm overlooking?

This. With the exception of current Tiagra. You may still be able to find new 56-5700 or 66-6700 for reasonable cost.

I always forget that 4700 outlier.

Thanks, that does expand my options significantly. Might I ask, though, where do you go to look for new discontinued parts?

I've replaced my short cage Ultegra RD-6500 with a Sora RD-3000 to provide me with a larger range for climbing (11-34T cassette) on my Trek 5000. No problems with compatibility with the ST-6500 shifters. I'm also running a 48-34 FSA crankset.

Don't forget that Shimano's 9-speed mountain bike derailleurs are also compatible with Shimano's 9-speed road shifters.

Use this chart. Look under the "Pull Ratio" column and find anything with a 1.7 ratio and it will work with your 9 speed as long as the cage length is what you need for your gearing setup. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...#gid=847158527

Wow, that's a pretty comprehensive spreadsheet; I've bookmarked it for future reference. Nice work, thanks.

What is your derailleur doing currently that you don't like? Everything has a service life but, honestly, I think that derailleurs are generally one of the most reliable components on the entire bike.

Well I can't take credit for the spreadsheet as it was posted/created by another BF member (can't remember who) awhile back but yes, it sure is useful. Also at the very bottom of the webpage there are some other charts for speed calc, cranksets, etc.

I replaced a short cage 105 with Sora RD-3000 medium cage to run 11/36 with 39/48 on my cross bike acting as road bike. Shifts smooth and quick.
