Thanks, you are so kind. Just wanted Kim to know the kind hospitality of C&V. Had those levers for a couple of years. Did nothing with them and didn't have any plans, so why not? Folks have been so good to me. Here was an opportunity to do something nice for a new member of C&V.

Drove through Long Beach today on my way from LAX to Dana Point. So good to be here in the sunshine and warmth! Ready to put in a few miles walking tomorrow. It will be great!

OEM tire size?

I bought my black SR500 new when I was 21 yrs old in 1987. It’s been my only road bike up until 2013 when I purchased a used Cervelo P2SL just 3 weeks before completing the Louisville Ironman. I still have the SR500’s Wolber front wheel but I had to replace the rear rim about 23 years ago. (Just the rim and spokes while reusing the original hub and rear sprockets.). With the exception of the tires, seat and brake hoods, everything else has been original.

However, a few weeks ago, I took the Easton Velomax wheels from my tri bike and put them on my SR500. I literally dropped 20%+ from my trip times on the very next ride. And I continue to repeat these new quicker times. The wheels also have an 11 speed Durace rear cassette so I disengaged the index shifting. The Shimano 105 front spockets work perfectly with the Durace chain and rear cassette.

I love how this bike rides and looks.

Now, after all these years, I cannot remember the original tire size. Were they 700x25c? Or were they 700x23c?

thank you in advance.

Edit, No width give in the '87 catalog, at Vintage Cannondale, but the '88 shows the SR500 having 25 width tires, Cannondale 1988 Bicycle Catalog Michelin Select 700x25. The models above the 500 had 20 width tires on them. I had my SR300 with 23 width, but it was a '91.

Welcome to the C&V forum, good to have you aboard. When you get the necessary 10 posts please put up some pics of your 'Dale.

Thanks Bill. I just put new 25c’s on it because I’m now doing most of my riding on the Monon Trail. They fit within the frame just fine yet I can just barely get them to clear the front derailer mount on the seat tube. So I thought this forum would be a good place to check.

I’ll share pictures as soon as I can. In my opinion it looks great with the red and white trim on the black Easton wheels.

As long as the 25 fit, IMHO you are getting a better ride with them, most likely. I have 700X25 Continental GP4000 S II, on my CAAD 10. Still fit with on the geometry and gives me just a slight softening of the ride over the original 23 Schwalbe Lugano had. The SR had tight clearances all around, even my '97 SR500T didn't;t want anything more than 25s mounted. Never really bothers me at all, even my two vintage rides have 25 tubs on them.

Glad you tried us out, stick around and enjoy the great folks here. We can be codgers and a bit cranky at times, but like a fungus, we kind of grown on you.

Bill, looking at the color options in the 1988 catalog, I’m realizing I have a 1988 SR500 not a 1987. So the 25c’s are the correct size. Thank you.

, that is why I included the link to VC. Great site for gathering information, Use their serial number pages to be certain about the year, and you'll know the gouge on your ride.

Yep, 25's will be the largest you can fit on an SR frame of that vintage.
Sticking point is the FD mount.

Beautiful bike!

My first real bike was a 1986 SR500 with a Shimano 600 (now Ultegra) group! That plum color was very cool. I regret selling that bike and if I ever see one in my size I am likely to snap it up. Loved that bike.
