A relaxing 3 hour Sunday ride along one of my favorite local mixed surface routes. Farmland, historic wagon roads, gravel dikes and trails. I can either add 3 hill climbs for a workout or keep it relatively flat for the FG.

i don't know what's wrong with me, but i really like loose and rutty climbs apparently. so far the best elevation per mile gain type rides i've found around here is exploring different routes up to our local cell/radio towers. a couple friends told me about this single track trail that takes you up that i haven't checked out before, so i went for a ride yesterday to see what it's about. super fun ride, tho the decent made me glad i chose a 26er to build as my cheap go anywhere bike rather than an old 700c like i originally planned. it's just too bad it won't fit a dropper post, the seat likes to smack my cheeks any time i catch a little air.

I hope nobody minds if I add some photos to go along with this excellent ride report. White Chuck is a 7,000' mountain that towers over the town of Darrington; that may not sound like much if you live in Colorado but the town is 400' above sea level. You can see the summit shrouded in clouds, a large, rocky obelisk.

There is a long, rough dirt road that goes to 4,800', ending in a lovely meadow, with a faint trail. The trail doesn't go very far, about a mile through some trees to a meadow. From there, there's a loose and exposed gully leading to the west ridge. From here, the climbing is straightforward, but more sketchy than words can get across. I invited @HTupolev to join me on this, thinking it would be a walk in the park, I'm so glad he had the good sense to decline. For more than a mile, the ground is down sloping, and either loose and crumbly, or slabby with pebbles to trip you, all of this with cliffs immediately below. One wrong step and it's all over. I wanted to be on belay, but the route wasn't protectable, there were a few parallel cracks several rope lengths apart.

Miles and miles of straight gravel with no traffic.

Turn the corner and you're riding on twisting undulations, looking for birds on every pond in the low lying terrain. This road is fun to ride with constant up and down without any hills longer than 30 seconds for 5 miles.

Just feels like you're relying on magic. I've had mine long enough to need to get them reslung, and they've never let me down. They're often the only things that will work. But it makes me just a little nervous every time.

For the record, I screwed that anchor up, but noticed before I weighted it.

Today’s ride had quiet a few “Dead End” signs and similar warnings.

Did a 35mi ride today and passed about 20 cyclists coming the other way that were part of a new race/fondo i didnt know about. Gonna check that out for next year.

Most of it was river valley hill climbing. Fun fun!
