Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road bikes that break the rules?

It's been a long time since I've posted here, but I have a question that will be hard to research on my own:

What production bikes are there that say to heck with the UCI rules and use unconventional designs or have weights below the 15lb minimum that UCI dictates?

Cheers!

Not “road” per se but a lot of the tri specific bikes are not UCI legal.

IIRC quite a lot of current ProTour frames can easily be built under the weight limit and pro teams resort to taping ballast to them to get them legal.

Tri bikes are the real "UCI illegal" ones with things like integrated hydration and farings. They are ugly as sin and banning them is one of the few good things the UCI has done.

I this really true?
I have seen specs on quite a few "Pros" bikes and a lot of them are not at the UCI limit.
In my experience with building bikes to get under the 6.8kg you do have to make a bit of an effort getting light stuff to achieve it.
It isn't difficult but you definitely can't just buy top end regular components and expect it to be under that weight.

One of the photo galleries CyclingTips had for the TDF bikes this year showed CCC had taped weight to the downtube on a TCR to get it over the weight limit.

They could definitely be wrong, but the guy seemed to know his tech at least.

'06 TCR Advanced LE, with 10s Red and Shimano RS80s, 6.7kg. With 50mm Caden carbon tubulars, 6.3kg.

Bikes with discs are about 3-400g heavier.

With pedals, bottle cages and computer mount?
Also Red is the lightest groupset and Giant one of the lighter frames.
Starting with something like a Pinarello and Shimano you are adding quite a bit straight away.

Yep, some fairly stock factory bikes can be well under the UCI limit, and need to be weighted for competition. Phil Gaimon had to add weight to his KOM bike to participate in a race sometime during the past year. He stuffed a d!ld0 down the seat tube. Not even kidding. Check the video.

But if I'm recalling correctly some of the autumn hill climb competitions popular in Europe don't have weight limits. Highly specialized bikes, discipline and tends to be dominated by a handful of specialists.

With toeclip pedals and lights, no cages or computer. Unpadded seat.
