You cleaned me out of the first category. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the second.

Completely misread that as shifters. I am sure I have one. Let me check.

ISO - 28.6 dia clamp on FD. Triple, bottom pull. Needs lots of travel outward.

Have? Ask. I have an assortment of extras.

do you want a "short cage" ala more a Mtn. bike style for smaller chainrings or a longer "road style cage"?

This is going on a MTB with rather eccentric rings.

Hmmm, that could go "either way" I guess the more crucial detail is how large is your biggest chainring and how small the smallest?

Have you tried any FDs already that didn't work (because of the shape of the cage or some other factors)?

I have a bunch of FDs and was trying them all on a fussy cobbled set-up and really learned that some combinations (chainrings, tooth spreads, spindle width and angle of the seat tube) are unforgiving and hard to find the "perfect fit" with ANY FD, some of the time.

This was a "learning experience" but can't recall now exactly what it was that I learned...

48 - 30. It sits outboard a couple mm outboard more than a non-eliptical could.

Thanks.

Alternatively, a shim to reduce a 31.8 to 28.6 would allow me to adapt one of two FDs that might be able to deal with the shifting.

These (when I have had one) tend to be specific to the specific model of FD rather than something generic that can be used for "any" clamp...but maybe you won't need to go there.

Here's one photo of a FD six-pack (I have 2 more pix, but will reserve those for an email if needed):

4 Shimanos, 2 Sun Tours
From top left to bottom right these are:
1. Shimano Deore LX with small cage, FD-M565, "stroke" is appox. 22mm
2. Shimano FD-MC10, small cage, stroke 20mm
3. Shimano Deore DX, long cage, FD-M650, stroke 22mm
4. Shimano Deore XT, long cage FD-M735, stroke 22mm
5. Sun Tour GX, long cage, stroke 25mm
6. Sun Tour Mountech, long cage, stroke 21mm
Note that to calculate the stroke i adjusted the screws on all so they were as far inboard as practical then manually pulled the mechs down to as far as the cage would travel with "high" screw as far out as practical. The measurements are all a little conservative and not 100% accurate.

I've seen them as add-ins when purchasing FDs new in the past. I just happen to not have any more at the present time.

Wow! Thanks for going through all that. Given my set-up, I am interested in the greatest stroke - the ARX. Let's finalize in PMs. If you have any wants, please let me know.

Niche product, but they are available. Some are make/model specific, but others appear to have wider applications (if not completely universal). Here are a couple of examples of what appear to be the latter:

I had great success using one or two of the hard rubber shims that used to come with Cat-eye lights, and others. Those shims have raised lips on the edge and held a 35 mm campy triple fd on a 31.8 C-dale tube. Never budged or failed in the few years I owned it.

ISO Campy Ti Record differential calipers

Looking for a nice pair of Campy Ti Record differential calipers with all original Ti hardware at a reasonable price. I've got too much to trade to list here but am fine buying outright as well. Please check rear fixing nut (the one with the set screw) to make sure it's not cracked. Have had two like that.

Your #5, the Sun Tour GX, long cage, stroke 25mm will work for a triple?

Sure - this is the type. All hardware, mounting nut, nut on rear, adjuster are titanium. Front is dual pivot, rear is single.

I believe (but can't guarantee) that ANY of these 6 FDs might work for SOME triples (but there are many variables).

But re: the GX, it's the one FD that the requester has picked to try with his triple...so it's gone.

1st gen Cyclone FD *with* housing stop for one without...

I've got a 1st gen Cyclone front derailleur with the cable-housing stop, looking to trade for one without. Yeah, I know, I can run the cable through the stop or bypass it and the FD works just fine. But think of the 2g I can shave off without that extra bit of aluminum!

More like Drewium.

Those front mechs with a cable-stop are special, and good ones are uncommon.
Every frame with a cable-stop on the downtube wants one.
