Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

8 speed cassette on an 8,9,10, 11 speed hub. Spacer needed?

I looked in the search and did not really find the answer to this question. I have an 8 speed setup, and I just purchased a set of Vuelta superlites that have an 8-11 speed free hub. The wheels came with a spacer, but I'm not sure if I need to used it for my 8 speed cassette. Any thoughts? Thanks so much in advance and sorry for the newby question.

You shouldn't need it with an 8 speed cassette.

Yes he should need one on an 11 speed hub. 1.85mm spacer. Wouldn't need on a 10 speed hub.

8 and 9 speed need 1.85mm spacer on an 11 speed hub.

10 speed is actually narrower than 9 speed and requires the 1.85mm spacer plus an additional 1mm spacer (which is included with the caseette).

So I'm guessing the spacer that came with the wheels is the 1.8mm spacer? I need to find my calipers and measure...

Be careful. You have no idea which drivetrain he has and while shimano requires a spacer for 10 spd, SRAM doesn't despite cassette interchangeability.

If that's what was provided with 11 speed rear wheel/hub; 99% chance it's the correct ~1.85mm. The 1mm spacers (for 10-speed) come with Shimano cassettes.

This is true, but if the OP is using 8spd road components, I doubt he's got SRAM.

Well looking at the packet that the spacer came in, it stated on a small card that the spacer is used for 8, 9, and 10 speed cassettes. No spacer needed for 11 speed. I am using an 8 speed SRAM cassette. Any ideas? Am I good?

LOL.

I just put on a Sram 8s speed cassette to an 11s hub body and didn't know that required spacers could be different for Shimano and Sram cassettes. I initially put on a 1.8mm spacer but it didn't leave many threads for the lockring. So I used a 1mm spacer. Learn something new every day.
