Retirement Ride turned Into a Nightmare
Unbelievable. Just no words. Thoughts and prayers for the families and other cyclists involved.
It’s really hard to understand how this could happen from the descriptions in the article.
Anyone here know any of the riders involved?

So tragic and so senseless. Can’t imagine the pain.

When I lived in Las Vegas - bought my first 'mountain' bike, just to get off the roads. What a crazy place!, esp for cyclists.

You nailed it. Since he was not impaired, it had to be distracted driving. Makes me wonder about all the “infotainment” systems in vehicles not to mention texting. First time I saw a guy play a movie on his car radio mini-screen I thought, OMG whose going to get killed because of these? I would outlaw them.

I am not sue what caused this . My thoughts and prayers for all those involved, such a tragedy . I have had close calls and I often think about how vulnerable we are. Be careful out there and stay safe as possible. I never demand right of way, I take my part of the road as far right as safe. I do practice vehicular cycling and stop at stop signs and red lights but there are no guarantees. Joe

He was impaired with methamphetamine
If he fell asleep it was because he was coming down from a high on methamphetamines. The report in yesterday's paper showed he was about 5 times the legal limit for meth residue in his blood. That's why the police saw him fail the test for drunk driving but could not smell alcohol on his breath. This is something bike riders can never anticipate. I have 30 yeas of riding in the Las Vegas valley and have seen the cycling infrastructure improve greatly over the years. I was hit once in those 30 years and suspect it was an impaired driver too. Clear day, Sunday morning with almost no traffic, on a 4 lane road with marked bike lanes. The driver came up in the right lane and grazed my handlebar in a hit-and-run. It took a while to get comfortable riding again but I don't obsess about getting hit because I ride aware of the surroundings.

Lock him up and charge him with murder. As a society, either we are serious about highway carnage, or not.
