Top tube protector
Hi everyone, I just picked up my first nice bike, and I'm starting to go on distance rides to the parks and everything, and all the bikes are all chained up together, and I wanna protect it from getting scratched to hell while chained to poles and things.
I don't want a foam pool noodle thing, but want something.
I was thinking of ordering some fake leather grip tape that matches my bike color and wrapping the tube with that.
Looking for suggestions that protects my frame a little bit but isn't super dorky at the same time.

Depending on what length top tube your bike has, buy three or four pairs of OURY MTB grips. Use a razor blade to cut off the end flange and then run a slit down them lengthwise. Wrap them around the top tube and glue in place. Great protection and it also makes it comfortable for posing for photos with you bike on your shoulder. I have them on all my bikes. It's rad dude.
Oh yeah, super important. Makes sure to line up all the OURY logos in the same direction facing the drive side, and pick a matching color or it will look really silly.

Wrap it up with old tire tubes. My bike gets thrown around and locked up in those big racks like you mentioned pretty frequently, the old tubes keep it from getting overly scratched and makes the bike look a little less appealing to thieves, or so I like to think.
Anyway scratches won't compromise the frame in any way. I know you wanna keep it looking clean but if you're riding the bike and using it like it should be then it's gunna get scratched no matter what.

As you can see, most of the folks replying to your querry think protecting your top tube from scratches is a tad silly.
So do I.
OTOH, it is your bike, so do what pleases you.
Your initial suggestion of faux leather bar tape is a good one.
Or use any type of bar tape...or tennis racquet grip tape.

A bike with the frame wrapped in bar tape will be far uglier than a bike with scratches. Scratches = battle scars for bikes. A bike with no scratches is a bike that doesn't get ridden.
