Bonded frames were very popular from the late 70's through the late 90's, and probably some outside of that.
An interesting idea, allowing experiments with unusual material pairing and maybe simpler manufacture.
I think a lot of them are really good looking as well.

I don't know for sure if this is bonded or not, but there isn't any other form of obvious mechanical bond between the aluminum tubes, so...bonded. Just a bit more craptacular than what the OP was hoping for, probably.

Here's a few photos of a much loved Opera Leonardo. Carbon main tubes with alu lugs, carbon wishbone seatstays, alu chainstays & bottom bracket, alu head tube, carbon fork.
Rides beautifully with plenty of comfort, great handling and acceleration.
It was a rare model: Pinarello changed it quickly, but I don't intend to.

Here's one that brought down a brand. Peugeot introduced a line of bikes made with what they called the Pechiney process, named after their factory where it was developed and they made two very nice bikes called the Comete and the Galaxie. Same frame, but one had Euro components and the other had the original Shimano 105 group. At some point a couple of instances of de-bonding took place and the then-prez of Cycles Peugeot USA instituted a recall of every single one sold in the U.S. I hired on as a rep at about mid-recall so was treated to the sight of the NJ warehouse stacked with piles of these things that had been bought back.

Being a certified bike nut I could not resist finding the best example in my size of a 105-equipped Galaxie and I asked one of the managers what it would take for me to get one. "Promise me you'll NEVER ride it," is what he told me. I kept it for a few years and traded it away to a shop owner even crazier than myself.

It was that Pechiney fiasco that contributed to Peugeot's decision to exit the U.S. market.

Not my bike, but I spotted this Vitus bonded carbon at a coffee stop out in Santa Paula, CA. Interesting bar wrap, not sure what the blue stuff is. Pretty bike though.

The weight-weenied-out Vitus 979. Plastic Stronglight headset, Scott Superbrake on the back and Gran Compe NGC450b on the front, TopLine cranks, American Classic seatpost, Cinelli bars/stem with aftermarket alu hardware, Cyclone rear mech, Superbe front (both the lightest Suntour made), hollow-pin gold chain, Superbe brake levers, and a very stupid 18 spoke front wheel. The "T" flaked off of the passenger side, so I made an R to go in there instead, because I work with HIV in my lab. This is the only virus you can't catch!

I bought this frame used and put another 5,000 miles on it until I noticed cracks forming between the carbon tubes and the aluminum joints, mostly around the top tube/headset. Small hairline cracks started to appear in the paint. Now it's wall art.

Last ride 76 

Working on it now, just had to grab a bite. I am figuring out how to manage the freehub, it's Campy,g and I'm going down to 8 speed... As I still want to use DT shifters. I never intended to use modern wheels, but I got them a week before the bike showed up on FBM 2 weeks ago... How can I not use these wheels? Serendipitous, actually cause the one thing that made me hesitate on the wheels, were the anodized nipples!
but now I have to re-figure the drive train components... Always complicating things, that's me.

Here's something a bit different not nearly as nice as most of the above bikes but a well built and interesting example of a multi construction multi metal frame set Raliegh MT-200 has over sized 6061 alloy main Tubes bonded to OS unknown connection tubes welded to a 4130 chro-mo rear section with some interesting detaisl like cable stays integrated into bonding support rings and use black paint to oboscure the weld s and red anodized main tubes to highlight the bonding main tubes.

Easton 6000 aluminum tubes anodized with pink leopard print bonded in cold-forged CroMo lugs and stays, with a Tange Bigfork, all painted gloss black. Was Raleigh USA’s highest model with full Deore XT. I LOVED the color scheme, reminded me of my childhood! I HATED selling this, but so happy that it is being loved and ridden by someone who fits it
