Giant Roam 2 vs Trek DS 2

Hey everyone! I am looking to buy my first hybrid/dual sport book. I am looking for a bike I can ride around town but also take on the greenways and some trails at a park.

I've visited several bike shops and have, I think, narrowed my choice between the Giant Roam 2 and the Trek DS 2. Interested in any recommendations and opinions on either of these bikes or perhaps another bike I should consider.

The Roam 2 is $570 and the Trek DS 2 is $660.

My understanding is they are essentially the same bike.

I think the general consensus is you will get more 'bang for your buck' with the Giant Roam. I had one and loved it, so I might be a little biased...

Having said that, you should test ride them both and see which one you prefer...

Hi, Jeff, and welcome.

Your links go to older model years of the bikes. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. Are you looking at current model year bikes (2020)? The links and prices for the current model are below:

2020 Giant Roam 2 - $670
2020 Trek Dual Sport 2 - $670

The retail prices are identical between the two. Both have aluminum frames and Suntour 63mm NEX lockout forks. They both have Tektro HD-M275 hydraulic brakes. The Trek has a 3x8 drivetrain whereas the Giant has a 2x9 drivetrain. The Giant has a lower low gear (28 - 36 vs. the 28-32 on the Trek) and the Trek has a higher high gear (48 - 11 vs. the 44 - 11 on the Giant). The Trek comes with 40m tires and the Giant comes with 42mm tires.

None of that above makes much of a difference...what will be more of a factor is personal fit (which bike fits you the best) and subjective things like color and style (which bike do you like better?) and bike shop experience (which shop do you like better?).

NOTE: if you're shopping older model year bikes, where components and prices differ, then any of the above is subject to change. :-)
