Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I spotted a train on today's ride. Mostly kinda boring single stack container train, with the exception of one piggybacked trailer on the first car.

Cortana was great for text messages, navigation, music playback, stuff like that. I don't use the Google assistant nearly as much. I have been using Alexa, but that's mostly for stuff like, "what time does XYZ open?" or "what's the forecast for today?" or "set a timer for 20 minutes" - mundane, but somewhat useful.

An unrelated question. Will Hannah be relegated to the new car or the Saturn? If option #1 , it could be a big win for her.

Everything has been too big since the iPhone 5. I have a 7 now and that’s borderline pocketable.

I don't want the damn things to talk to me, either.
First thing I did when I got my phone was turn off things like responding to "Hey, Siri" even when locked. That's too creepy, because it means it's always listening.

And I realize that turning that feature off doesn't mean it's NOT always listening, but at least the damn thing doesn't REMIND me it's always listening.

You can shut those off in Settings. The defaults are unbearable, yes.

I've never had a cell phone, Garmin, or other mobile device. When I was working it was tech overload 5 days a week, so I don't want to deal with it when not there. Plus, I don't like talking on a phone, never have.
I don't even have a speedometer on my bikes or even carry a watch ever. I get mileage and other data from people I ride with, if I want it.
Am I a Luddite?

No.

I would not have had a clue that you didn't have any of those thing, simply because you don't puff your chest out and proclaim you don't. Daily.

There's a classic Twilight Zone about an old man pining for the simpler days days of yesteryear. Of course, this was in the '60s, and he was pining for the simplicity of the '40s. Not that there's anything wrong with that, per se (I'm certainly not one to criticize resistance to change!), but there shouldn't be any real social currency to not adopting newer devices.

In other news, this morning's ride included sampling a bit of very light gravel to see if 28s are enough to handle the Violet Crown Trail here in Austin (verdict: newp!). Bike needed a wash, and got it, including fresh GP5Ks. However, how do people clean fine grit out of things like derailleur hinges and brakes? I certainly won't take them apart, but the OCD in me knows they're not clean in there.

Oh, man, I think there were a couple of those! I think Rod Serling was prone to nostalgia. Or maybe it was a more general feeling in 1960?

Funny here in 2020 with global warming and 1000 people a day dying of COVID-19 and 40 million out of work very suddenly, that somebody 60 years ago was pining for a simpler time. I think I'd trade this stuff for the Cold War and a booming economy and not bat an eye.

There was one, specifically, with a man whose radio was giving him 1940s broadcasts which he preferred to the '60s. It was also clearly a criticism, not an embrace of nostalgia.

Maybe not, if you remember how that one ended, assuming we're thinking of the same one - sweaty Lois Nettleton, right?

Yeah, true. These episodes were never an embrace of nostalgia. In all cases it's more like the main character has a chance to experience what he thinks he wants and finds you can't go home again.

We have 3 cars. The minivan (which may be a goner, supposed to find out tomorrow), the Saturn (which only I can drive because stick), and an old 2001 Maxima we bought from a fellow cyclist about 3 years ago. Van or replacement shared between mrs datlas and Heidi (who will be going to USC from her bedroom), Hannah has the Maxima which may die any day but we hope not. She lives about 10 miles south of here and goes to West Chester University.

To keep us all straight, here is a family pic:

That’s Hannah, mrs datlas, Heidi, and me. Only one missing is Jackie but everyone knows her well enough.
