Shimano 10 Speed Compoenents

Greetings,

Is it worth it to continue using Shimano 10 Speed components? I have a 105 10 Speed shimano groupset on my bike and recently needed to replace the rear cassette. It was almost $70. I ride about 4k miles per year. That same cassette cost me 40 bucks 2 years ago.

The 105 groupset works fine and I have done plenty of races on it and the limitations was never the components.

What were your experiences? Did you upgrade the components or just keep stocking them? Or did you guy get a new bike?

thanks

I find them all day long online for 34 bucks or less. Where are you shopping? While I like supporting my LBS, I don't usually buy from a LBS products that the bike shops can't get for any better price than I can.

You won't find a cheaper cassette by upgrading your groupset. However at some point your older groupset will run low on inventory and cost will go up. But I don't think that time has come for 105 5700 or whatever it is you have.

Here's what I am looking at - https://www.biketiresdirect.com/prod...l=1&ssn=127068

I am looking at ultegra cassette because i need 12-30T and none of the 105 has 12-30T.

thanks

I'm riding a mix of 10 speed and 9 speed on one bike, 9 speed on two other bikes, with one full 10 speed bike. I have a box full of components.

I have 10s on all my bikes. No concerns. You should be able to get cassettes and chains etc at a reasonable price from ScamBay or other suppliers.

Yeah that extra $30 per cassette every couple of years is a real killer, much cheaper to just spend $3500 on a new bike

Oh, well 11-30 might have been a little useful to know up front. But you can find them about 15 dollars cheaper than bike tires direct. Surpising for me, but Amazon came up with low priced CS-6700 but I didn't click into it to see if they had 11-30. You'll have to do your own surfing. It's good practice. <grin>

That depends on your need or desire for an 11T cog. On my cyclocross bike I have no need for an 11T cog. 12T smallest cog is plenty. There is only *one* 11-speed cassette that isn't a 11T - the 12-25T and that has no merit for anything. So going to 11-speed buys me nothing but more expensive chains (that wear out faster) and more expensive cassettes (almost 1.5x $) - and tighter distances for mud to pack in. [I did move to a right-hand ST-4700 shifter and RD-6800 for the more accurate muddy shifts due to the increased cable pull.]

There is also the CS-4700 12-30T that is really cheap. You can lower the weight by using an old CS-6700 aluminum lock-ring instead of the steel CS-4700 one. Ditto for the smaller aluminum spacer from a CS-6700 over the large CS-4700 plastic one.

There is no 11-30T Shimano 10-speed cassette. There is only 12-30T. The 11-30T is 11-speed only.

Dr_UNIX Well that's interesting. I wonder why not?

I do see now that I missed that the OP said 12-30 and I even quoted the statement. Oh well, I'm going to fall back on my ADHD without the H excuse! <grin>

And lets not get into the whether or not a 11 cog is needed thing. I use mine. 12 just sometimes doesn't provided me a comfortable downhill cadence. If they didn't make an 11 tooth cog, I'd be okay. I'd just coast more.

A couple of years ago when I built up my CX bike, I went 10-speed in order to repurpose some first gen Sram Red shifters I had in a bin. And since people were getting rid of their 10-speed wheelsets, I picked up a few spares for a song. When I built up a bike for my son, it was natural to use 10-speed so we could swap wheels whenever. Found a Tiagra mini-group online for a very reasonable price. All in all, it's a great bang for the buck.

I'd stay with 10, unless there's a gear at one end or the other of the range that you feel you need. Earlier this year I finally upgraded my bike with 8 speed Dura Ace to 10, because 25 teeth in the back was no longer enough. But I have absolutely no desire to upgrade to 11 or 12, because 30 is enough.

I think you are correct that they never made the 12-30 in the 105 level. However, in addition to the Ultegra there is also a Tiagra level 12-30. I have used both, not sure I could tell the difference on the bike.

A couple years ago, the time had come for my front derailleur and cassette, and I decided to treat myself doing a partial upgrade from 5600 to 5800 (left the original crankset/BB). At the time, I thought I'd really like having an 11-speed, 11-32 cassette, and parts were still cheap from the UK.

Turns out that I didn't need the 32, and ended up replacing it with an 11-28 after about a month. I don't regret the upgrade, though!
