G'Day Folks

I have revcently picked via eBay a Raleigh Pansonic Team Replica 531c tubing. The frame is in very good condition and the paintjob is unblemished. I am wondering if I should do a build up of the bike in it's current state with vintage parts or wether I convert to single speed and repaint into a more urban colour? I don't want to commit a crime by destroying something that may be of significance?

If I persist with build in current state, can anybody advise what sort of equipment these were built up with? Also has anybody got additional info ie catalogs etc?

Very interested in getting valuable feedback.

I would not, under any circumstances, alter that frameset in any way. I would definitely consider putting a modern kit on it (Veloce 10) and ride it. Beautiful bike and very worthy of riding in a more modern state...

I had in mind a slick new paint job with some retro gruppo on it and brooks saddle, non aero brakes etc etc (my current pipe dream).

I forgot to mention I picked up another full Raleigh 531C using complet 105 recently as well. Just got delivered and in LBS to change bar wrap, new tyres and pedals.

That is a sweet looking ride with the newish group on it.

As for the Panasonic Raleigh, I'd go with C Record if you can find it. I think that'd make it period correct...

beautiful bike, i wouldnt paint it . im waiting for the same bike to come up on ebay,but in a 753 reynolds. i would put the period correct group on it , but thats just me.parts probably would be campy super record, or c-record.i watch ebay for a bike just like that everyday.i dont know how i missed that one.ill look in my mags at home and see what they had on them.

I wouldn't think of painting it.

The Team colors are both unique, and good looking, particularly in contrast to their horrid McDonalds scheme of the '70s.

Build it up with a vintage Campy gruppo, C-Record and Super Record come to mind. Use an ITM stem and Cinelli Criterium handlebars, Campy C-Record seatpost and a Brooks Pro saddle. Mavic G 40 or MA 40 rims with Campagnolo C-Record or early '70s Record high-flange hubs.

The above is not exactly a period selection of parts, but would make for a great looking combo.

Very good condition for it's age. Paint and decals have very minor blemishes and would be hard to find a better example. The pearl white with blue looks the goods.
It is constructed from very desirable Reynolds 531C (C for competition) and has chromed Campagnolo dropouts and fork tips.
The seat tube measures 57cm centre to top and 56cm top tube c-c.
The Stronglight headset comes with the frame.

I am selling my much loved Raleigh Road Race Bike. I bought it new in 1991 and it is a classic beauty. The bike has a REYNOLDS 531 'C' (competition rifled) chrome moly tube frame. Not sure of exact size, but the down tube is 57cm measured from the middle of top tube (ie under seat) to centre of crank and suits someone 6 foot perfectly (ie plus or minus 2 inches is also ok). The bike features LOOK clipless pedals - I will throw in a pair of DIADORA cycling shoes (size 10 Aus) and cleats for the lucky buyer. AVOCET COMPUTER. The groupset is the very attractive satin grey finished SHIMANO 105 (ie hubs, deraileur, cluster, etc). ZEFEL pump and CANNONDALE bag included. The rimes are WOLBER 700C with MICHELIN tyres. TIOGA saddle. Regularly serviced by professional shop. Have a close look at the pics to see excellent condition (only mark is touched up scratch on lower chain stay from a dropped chain - marks near crank are only oil that I should have wiped off before taking pic - sorry). These bikes are true classics. This is one of the last made in the England factory as shown on down tube sticker. Sticker set is as per Tour De France Raleigh's of the era and paint work is all original and as good as it looks in the pics. These are now sought after classics (do google search of "classic Raleigh" to see pedrigee details). Chrome moly tubing are making a resurgence in popularity (some in conjuction with carbon stays/forks) as they are a softer riding frame while being stronger making them ideal for training and touring rides.

just a couple of things: 531 is manganese moly, I think...and I'm pretty sure that Reynolds never made a rifled tubeset. Too big for me... good luck!

I'd suggest leave frame exactly how it is. It's a stunner. As for equipment: retro or modern as long as it can do the frame justice. I have a Raleigh catalogue from around '86 or so with the Reynolds 753 Team Replica in it. I can give you the spec. if you wish. I could do to scan it in a some point soon too.

Incidentally, I saw a Team Replica on e-bay (UK) just the other week. It was at 600 pounds before it was sold!

Nice frame. The Panasonic team in 1984 and 1985 used Campagnolo Super Record on their Raleigh frames, not C Record.

They also used Cinelli bars and stems, Mavic rims and I think ISCA or Cinelli saddles. I'd hazard a guess that with Clement Setas tyres, white Benotto plastic tape and Binda extra toe straps you could manage to look just like Phil Anderson or Eric Vanderaerden.

Have just been looking through the '85 Raleigh Lightweights catalogue. Stunning though the Team Replica frame is I think it was surpassed by the Team Replica/Crome frame set. I'd pay good money for one of those.

I have a 531 Team Pro ("McDonald's ? Colours), it was the trademark of what was the most powerful pro race team of the time. (Red/Yellow/Black)

They were a prominent team in the mid-1980s. With guys like Phil Anderson, and Eric Vanderaerden, competing on the European circuit. I lived in the U.K. at the time and there was also a small British Raleigh / Panasonic team that raced on the British circuit, they had Malcolm Elliot on the squad. The Team Professional 753 was my dream bike the year I got into road racing, 1984.

So I take it this was Panasonic's electronics division or something sponsoring a racing team and not their bicycle division? Just seemed odd that Panasonic would be sponsoring Raleigh bicycles when they made their own.
