Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shoe recs for weird feet

Hi,

I'm having trouble finding shoes that fit - my feet are EXTREMELY long and EXTREMELY narrow. I have a secondhand pair of Shimanos in a size 45 that are comfortable lengthwise but way, way too wide. I'm in the market for new shoes and plan to check my LBS this weekend, but if anyone has recommendations for shoes that run narrow, I'd appreciate them.

FWIW, I'm also female and having issues finding women's cycling shoes in sizes larger than 42 or 43. If I try men's shoes, I run into the width issue.

Any ideas? I'm sure I'm not the only one with weird feet.

I have long, narrow feet with no arches. So far, Shimano and Specialized have fit the best.

If it's helpful, my regular shoe size is a women's 11.5 AA.

That sounds really rough. I've got size 13 mens, and I need narrow width shoes also. I tried normal widths of all the major manufacturers and none of them fit properly. Most I couldn't velcro tight enough. Its possible that wire closure would work better, but those are only found in $400 shoes.

Sidi used to make narrow width men's shoes (either Genius or Dominator). I've got a pair and they work well. I had to switch to SPD-SL though because I could only find 3 bolt shoes.
The Sidi women's shoes might be narrow enough for you if you can find the right size. If you look you may be able to find a NOS (new old stock) men's narrow online somewhere.

Some people have decent luck using SuperFeet or another insole to reduce volume. Beyond that you're looking at custom shoes. I actually considered it, because there are basically no options out there if you have very narrow feet.

Thanks, gsa. I'll check out Sidi women's shoes. The Superfeet insoles are also a good idea; I may try them in my too-wide Shimanos to see if it helps. I've encountered the same problem you have - the velcro just won't go tight enough to hold my foot in.

Also, I'm 5'7" and need a 50 cm frame so my proportions make me a difficult fit. 50 cm frame, size 45 shoes...

Doesn't Sidi make narrow width shoes?

Narrow width but not big enough in women's sizes. The men's narrows are too wide.

I am a female with long narrow feet ... and I love my Lake shoes. They're built narrow.

Hmmm. I wear 13EE men's shoes, and 48 normal-width Lakes. I have to get Mega Sidis.

Not sure how much help this will be since I'm a guy, but I have skis for feet too (12 1/2 AA) and am enjoying my Mavics. Not sure the model but they weren't expensive, just pulled them off the rack at the LBS and was astonished that my heel didn't swim around.
