Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Erg you're right, overlap, that's what I meant.

You have to have your spoke cards evenly distributed or it won't work

For me the trick to learn was how to steer to keep balance while going backwards. Any slight reverse roll and I would instantly panic and lose it. Once I learned the reverse steering bit I've had little problem and can stand with the feet in any position (excepting 12 and 6 o'clock) until my arms get tired. Which is what I have to work on next cause I'm definitely need to have a much lighter touch on the handle bars,

Anyways, it took me about two weeks, practicing for about a half hour each day after I got home to get it down.

I'm still not all that great at trackstanding with my bad foot, but I practiced a few days ago and stayed up for about 2 minutes. I can do a regular track stand indefinitely, but not while seated.

I saw one a couple weeks ago of a full race, wanna say it was 4 or 6 minutes long, and they did some wild trackstanding on the toughest part of the track. Can't find it, of course...

The advice above about getting into the stand by slowing, slowing, slllowwwwing... good stuff too.

Sorry for bringing back a dead thread but I just wanted to say that I successfully learned how to trackstand today. I hadn't really practiced much since making this thread, I was focusing more on skid stuff since I decided to take my brake off. However, today I was locked out of my house so while waiting I decided to try and learn.

What worked for me was staying on my saddle, and not standing up. I kept my feet a little less than even. The advice of keeping my right foot a bit higher to catch myself really helped. Once I got the feel of it, it became incredibly easy to do. I even started trying more advanced things. All in all, I would say mission accomplished, haha. Thanks for the help.

If right foot is forward, turn wheel to right. If left foot is forward turn wheel to left. The more you turn the wheel closer to 90 degrees, you hit that mental point where you figure out how you have to balance. Try it with a slight incline or decline or just level ground. Even grass if you're afraid of falling. Don't start with clipless pedals better to screw on some platforms for practicing. And don't try to jump on the bike and trackstand, ride around some and slow down, @ss off the saddle, risers help, wide grip, if right foot is forward, turn handlebars to the right, turn knees inward, right knee will tap top tube, using your knee to keep frame steady, rock bike backwards and forwards, you'll get it just keep trying. Good Luck.

I don't know how to track stand, but sometimes I find myself at a stop light and I haven't put a foot down and I haven't moved for awhile.

A fellow visiting me awhile back had never seen a fixed gear bike before and he asked to ride mine.
Within 15 minutes he could ride backwards.

Go figure.
