Very few have a 70bike+frame collection.

Those are beautiful bikes, i broke my wrist but as soon as i get well i'm looking hardly to buy one. Here in Uruguay i only saw one for sale in facebook, for about 80 dollar, fully original, but i did not have the money at that time. As i like to hammer every bike i have, i'm planning to do that in a safe and sporty way so as soon as i get a LTS i will start to practice and learn about downhill and mountain biking

It's important to document your collection.
I use Pedal Room, and need to go back there and update almost everything.
There are places for pics, the group, serial #, etc.
Great help in case of a fire, theft, damages, etc.

I read this thread last night and documented my wheels, frames, groups, and full bikes.
Then I had to go out and get someone to beat some sense into me.

The problem comes in with the bikes that don't have a S/N.

I track:

S/N (when present)
Brand
Model
Year of manufacture/model year
Frame material
Primary color
Wheel size
Tire size
Nation of origin (gets complicated when it's something like a Palo Alto, or Koga Miyata)
Primary component group
Handle bar style
Whether it has racks/fenders
Overall condition
Identifying features

Where do you keep them all???

If you had the time, you could create a website to document them all.

Main page could be a Brief intro, Group Photo if possible, then a spreadsheet listing them by year, then Brand.

Each bike on spredsheet would have a clickable link opening a new page, showing several pics of the bike, specs and any interesting facts, thoughts and experiences with the bike.

This would be really easy to do, one main folder, sub folder for each bike, with pages and pics in each folder. While in college I was taking a class on HTML and we had to make a site for something. At the time I was in a pretty big Custom Car/Truck Club. We had 18+ members and went to shows almost every weekend during the season. I did a website for our club, its members and Vehicles.

It got a surprising amount of hits and comments.

My suggestion: Flickr. Text is fine, but pictures are what we want to see. If your goal is to have a personal database, do whatever you want. If your goal is to share the information, pictures!

Flickr will allow you to post up to 1,000 pictures for free, at full resolution, and you have plenty of text area to include all the information suggested, above. You could have a dozen pictures of each bike and still be under 1,000.

It wouldn't be a searchable database, however, if that's what you want.

But as you probably already know, pictures or it didn't happen!

I documented my Colnago in Word with one DS overall pic. I will have to look it up. I think I included frame material/configuration (531 db, Columbus Alle, etc.) I also added text description. Don't know if I added history..... Nope. I did a complete multiple page doc on the Trek 610 capturing the metamorphosis up to a point with all the details. Flickr became my database by album, pictures are fast and typing is much slower.
There are other interests that need documentation as well, that way maybe someone will appreciate what I collected and why after I am gone!
Here is my Flickr page, should you want to be overwhelmed with useless pics. Most are bike related. They all are not the best pics but rather all the pics, semi organized! Not all bikes/parts pictured are still in the stash. Not all the stash is on Flickr.

Thanks everyone. Yes, there will be lots of photos. The database will be for me, for insurance and my family, should I not be around to describe everything.

I like the idea of Pedal Room, I could throughly document everything in one place.

Yes. I don't see any point of writing anything other than year/make/model/dimensions with photo documentation. Its best for insurance or selling. Words are pretty much worthless.

And quite frankly, if you don't want your collection to be a burden on your family, get rid of it while it's your burden. A written database won't help make anything easier.
