This Boston Globe article on the BMX cruiser kids scene in Lynn provides a rare look at the phenomenon from the kids' perspective. Worth reading if you're puzzling over wheelies.

So here's the ongoing issue. Where should kids have their fun? Not on busy streets. Probably not on MUPs. They'd probably get kicked off from parking lots. Schools and parks where there's blacktop?

In the Globe article, a group of the cruiser kids were headed for the Lynn Woods. That's a pretty good local solution that's out of the way, unique to Lynn. But part of the appeal of riding in the streets is that you have autonomous transportation, you and your friends can go where you want. Probably an even bigger draw than wheelies.

(Thank <diety> these “analogies” were removed and these yoots will never know their “joy.”)

We used to have the cops show up and confiscate our whiffle ball equipment if we were playing in the street, but they never appeared with that level of force.
Difficult to view the kids pictured there as a serious public menace.

I really wouldn't have problems with them doing this on low-traffic streets, MUPs, most contexts, but what I saw was a lot of cars having to jam on their brakes and swerve to avoid hitting the kids popping in and out of the drivers' blind spots. Frankly, I'm not scared of them, I'm scared for them.
Lots of brick and mortar stores with big parking lots going belly up. Maybe there's an opportunity for more "pavement parks" for kids to ride, mess around and skateboard on.
