Near the entrance to the bike lane on the Brooklyn side of the Manhattan Bridge.

I doubt seriously that anyone intended to steal it, or it would have been gone. Looks like someone didn't want that bike and sign there and cut it with a torch. A lot of people object to the practice of permanent ghost bikes.

Someone ran into it. Not sure about the oil. Maybe punctured the oil tank?In fact, they do. That's why most municipalities ban them. However, states (on state roads) may allow them with a request. From what I've read, it varies by state and locality.

I can imagine the city council debate. One person will see all the memorials and say something about road safety. And the other councillor will see all the memorials and say they're ruining the looks of the city.

I would urge everyone to read up on sociopathy. Most of those afflicted with this condition enjoy getting a rise out of everyone just because they can. Once you read up on the pathology, senseless acts become understandable. For example, how could a normal person run down another human, pedestrian or cyclist, and then just drive off. For most of us, such a blatant lack of empathy would be unthinkable but to the sociopath this is SOP. There are numerous you tube videos on this condition but but a 10 minute video does not cover the subject well. Best is a book with some case histories such as "The Sociopath Next Door" by a Harvard psychologist, Martha Stout.

I think that is rust, not burn marks. It looks pretty clear to me that the sign post was struck. The concrete at the base would not be broken if it were cut. The yellow diamonds appear to have paint smears on them.
This just goes to show that no matter how highly visible you are, you can still get hit when the driver is not looking, paying attention or awake.

I was thinking the dark marks on the concrete and tires are mold from lack of enough sunlight from the shade created by the bike. Agree the sign and bike look like they were struck by something, the left chainstay looks broken.

I'm sure I'll get some flak for this, well intentioned I'm sure, but I feel they become roadside distractions and I don't think we need more distractions.
