Observations on the TdF Broadcast: What Paul Sherwen really brought to the Tour

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

For me it was Christian Van Velde that got on my nerves the most.

However, I did really enjoy some of his stage previews where he went out and did a tough segment of the upcoming stage.. really put it into perspective for an average Joe like myself

I'll stick with Eurosport.

If you want to hear names pronounced "natively" have a listen to Rob Hatch on Eurosport.

My take: it's often difficult to understand who the hell he's talking about because the "native" pronunciation and accent renders the name unintelligible to people (like me) who don't speak Italian or Spanish or whatever. I'm putting "native" in quotation marks because I'm not convinced he's actually pronouncing the names as native speakers would.

Far better to pronounce the names as a standard English speaker would so that the viewer can understand.

Early in this Tour, Vandevelde and Horner argued with each other about every. single. point. It became pretty ridiculous -- and annoying. I have a feeling somebody at the network talked with them about it. From one day to the next, the constant disagreement went away. They seemingly couldn't agree with one another enough from that point on.

I wonder if the conflict was due to somebody at the network telling them, before the tour, that differences of opinion make better television. If that's the case, they overdid it.

I picked up on that as well.

By the last couple stages it was getting very overdone.

Just be glad it's not the ESPN days with Adrian Karsten who knew nothing about bikes. His one liners were so bad.

Rob Hatch tries a bit too hard.
He needs a chill pill in general.
