Question Garmin Edge 810 DIY Battery Replacement?

It looks like the old battery in my trusty Garmin Edge 810 is not what it used to be.

I turned off Bluetooth and the back light, as Garmin suggests. On a 2-hour ride, it still lost 20% of its charge. At that rate, it won't make it through a long ride.

I'd rather not send it in to Garmin and be without the unit for who knows how long. Has anyone replaced a battery in a Garmin 800/810? It looks like a simple process.

I found this site that sells a 1000 mAh replacement battery and installation kit:

I use an external battery on all of my long rides. I am pretty sure my battery life on the 800 is still good because of that. A lipstick battery will last about 20 hours. Something to consider

Do you need a special cable to keep the Garmin from going out of recording mode?

I wouldn't trust the battery meter. The voltage profile is what that is looking at and if your battery is slightly off that, then it'll have you thinking the battery is low when there is still plenty of capacity. Estimating battery capacity from voltage is only precise when everything is perfect, IMO.

Have you ever let it run longer?

I think the special cables are only needed for the 500. I have never found a cable that wouldn't charge my 800. Of course, Garmin could screw anything up, so ymmv

My Edge 520 flips into "data" mode when connected to an outside power source. A cheap dongle fixes this. There are easy ways to disable the data link in a cable, too, so that you get power only.

I have never heard of anyone having external power cable problems with an 8xx, just 5xx.

Not on the 800, I certainly hope they didn't regress since then.
