Tube patch on tire?
I noticed a 1.5cm slit in my rear tire today - I don’t think it went all the way through and definitely didn’t puncture the tube.
Coincidentally, I have a new wheelset and new tires being shipped to me now but I have a 50mi ride on Saturday. To avoid a blowout, I applied a small tube patch to the outside of the tire. Thoughts? Will it help, is it useless, etc?

It will help keep the tube inside the tire but the patch isn't remotely strong enough to keep the tire from distorting at the cut. A tire casing boot is what you want. Park makes one. I make them from real dacron saicloth from a scrap a sailmaker gave me years ago. Quality duct tape would give you a better temporary repair than a tire patch. (Use a big piece and stretch the tape so it is closing the cut. Two later would be better.)
I use tire patches for small holes where all I am asking it to do is keep the tube where it belongs. Nail punctures and the like.

You could add a large patch to the inside for good measure.
I wouldn't do such experiments on a front tire since sudden failure upfront could hurt more than on the rear.

What you need to do is prevent the tube from pushing through the tire if the cut expands all the way through. That means the patch should be on the inside of the tire, not the outside. In an emergency on the road you can fold up a dollar bill so that it will fit inside the tire and cover the gash after you replace the tube or repair the hole in the tube. If you are going to do the 50 mile ride, you might use the dollar bill trick as a backup for the patch.

If the cut goes through the casing, you need to place a “boot” on the inside of the tire. Cloth sports tape or duct tape works well as a boot.
But this is just a temporary fix. Eventually, the tape will wear through, the tube will pop out of the opening, and it will puncture.
To protect the boot from wear, place some Shoe Goo on the outside of the tire. This stuff sticks well and is very sturdy. Wait at least a day before using the tire.

Gorilla tape works well as a boot for this purpose.
