Considering that the bike this is going on is completely chrome plated, the crank is one of the least of my worries.

Shouldn't be too bad with a cotton swab and mineral spirits.

That's why I have 4 bikes. I just keep switching off till it's time to clean, then I wash all 4 in an orgy of restoring order to the universe.
