Older Coppi with questions

Met "James" today in St Catharines, Ontario and he sold me a rather rough Raleigh Gran Sport with a Stronglight triple, for the cost of the triple.

James also has an older Coppi. Pictures not that great for detail. Can say chrome on forks in really far gone so either a re-chrome ($$$) or repaint in future, though haven't tried the aluminum foil trick. He's unsure about a sale due to that magical N+1 versus N-1 factor. I sympathize as I too have that issue....

Bike is older, has 120mm rear and cottered cranks. IIRC has some basic Campy. Not sure campy stuff as not up on their groupsets. Crankset might be Spécialités TA (?) or something else as I've never seen cottered Campy cranks. Shifters were band-on, mounted on downtube, actual shifters not present on mount and unsure if he still has them. Sorry I didn't get my own photos but he had to get back to work.

Posting incase anyone knows anything on this one. Sorry for limited info.

definite Fiorelli built

appears "late '60's" or "ca. 1970" time

looks to have been a one up from the bottom sort of model which received an owner mounted derailleur upgrade

frame may be three tube columbus or columbus plian gauge or falck

3TTT Touriste stem/bar set

brakes "appear" Universal 61

chainset appears Agrati

cannot get much more from these lo-res images...

---

please post again if you are able to get some better pictures...

visited listing and was able to get images to display a bit better -

lug pattern appears it may be Agrati "CORSA"

ends are Agrati stamped without gear hanger, nr. 000.8002 rear and nr. 000.8010 front

seat stay treatment is "bullet" style

pedals Sheffield Nr. 663 in economy zinc finish

may have come with Valentino gears originally...

plain steel saddle pillar

Thanks. He listed after we talked. I figure that $100 is too much (unless frame would be worth that). Would need paint and decals and rebuild....

Should've said that had I known the Coppi would be listed, I'd have offered $75 for the bike and said keep the wheels as the Stronglight crankset on the Raleigh is not surrendering.

the combination of bullet seat stays and stamped ends is suggestive of a low model...and then there are the zinc plated pedals

even if price low there is still the investment of time/work and treasure to put it into a roadworthy machine

OTOH you could probably get your investment back by parting out the gear ensemble; then you would have the bike with zero dollars invested

might make a fun starter project for a first time restorer

thank you for sharing it

currently tentatively thinking ca. 1967-68 for a date

I have an SR Semi-Professional frame set I'm building up just to get out of my garage, a Le Jeune mixte that needs a front wheel, a Miyata 610 (almost good to go) and a Takara Grand Touring that's still just a frame and forks that I promised myself I would have done before Covid leaves us so I can go on a serious road trip.

The only way I'd ant another bike will be as an easy flip to support my addiction. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't turning down a grail bike.

All good. I'll pass this one by though it was fun to check it out and owner is a cool guy.

If you'd seen the rust up close, you'd say $75 was too much!

I'm leaning towards this being hi-tensile steel based on the top tube cable stops. Columbus or even Falck tubed frames of the era would typically use cable clips.

You're likely right about the tubing, but I did have a same-vintage next-to-top model Fiorelli made from (Falck?) double butted CroMo with the same bullet stays and brazed stops. The model featured by the OP is definitely one of their lower ones, based on the stamped dropouts and cottered crank. Coppi/Fiorelli chrome was often sketchy.

Indeed the chrome was sketchy. Bike was still in owners shed at time and he told me the chrome was rusted completely through. I asked about polishing with aluminum foil and he told me no that it was too far gone. So it needs either a repaint or powder coating and after factoring new decals and knowing it was miles too small I'm out.

I love my Coppi/Fiorelli TdF Super, which was an upper mid-range model. The chrome is the worst, but the ride is great.

^^^ That is a handsome bike, even with a bit of patina!
