Removing Shimano 105 shifters with cables attached?

I'm about to do my first handlebar swap - replacing the drop bars on my wife's Trek Domane with a more compact version. On road bikes, is there usually enough slack in the brake and derailleur cables to get the shifters off of the old bar without disconnecting them? Or is it a "sometimes yes/sometimes no" kind of thing?

If you don't have enough slack, simply remove the bar from the stem

Depending on the cable routing and if there's slotted casing stops external one can often remove the casing from the frame stop and gain a lot of slack. Of course if your frame has internal routing then you are about to "pay" for that with the extra work to deal with this kind of service/change. Andy

You don't need 'slack'. Just remove the shifters w/ the cables/housing installed and put them on the new bars. I don't understand what the problem is here.

I may not be understanding the job - I thought that the shifters were held on with clamp bands that could be loosened but not removed entirely, such that the shifters have to be slid off the ends of the bars. But it sounds like even if that's the case, I should be able to manage, between unbolting the bar from the stem and the slack in the cables.

Thanks!

Most Shifters (but not all) have a band clamp on the bars and can be completely unbolted from them so you can remove your bars without worrying if the cables will be long enough to slide the shifters off the bars. Install new bars, slide on shifter band clamps, bolt shifters to clamps, done.
