Campy shifters and shimano RD
Okay friends,
I'm restomodding (sort of) a Schwinn Prologue. It came with mostly DA 7400 but with Suntour hubs. A friend just gave me some campy hubs laced to Mavic rims.
Quick question: the DA 7400 RD wouldn't happen to work with 8 speed campy indexed shifting would it?

8 Speed Campy is an orphan.
5.0mm cog spacing (same as Shimano 7 speed)

unfortunately no, it won't work, unless you run it on friction, then it *might* if you can find a chain that plays nicely with the different parts. now that I think of it, make sure the campy chain has the same pitch.

Campy 8 speed will shift your RD at 6.66mm cog spacing. That's not even close to anything.
You'll need Campy 11 to shift old DA (74xx) in either 7 or 8 speed mode.
Hubbub cable routing gives you 5.5mm spacing, good for an old standard spaced 6 speed.

I know the campy chains are narrower 5.5mm vs 5.6mm for shimano, I just wasn't 100% sure they have the same pitch (spacing between the pins), but it appears they do.

Thanks. So in other words...just buy a darn Campy 8 speed RD as well. I was hoping I wouldn't have to, but that's ok.

I'm overwhelmed with data at this point. I have the 8 speed campy wheels, so Campy is happening. What are my options?

you could just run it on friction, and then the shimano RD should work. you won't be able to use the indexing, but with 8 speeds that's not a huge issue. I would try it before you sink money into it, but at least the RDs are fairly inexpensive compared to the rest of the system. get a KMC 8 speed chain for like $15 and don't worry about it, they are cross compatible, and will shift perfectly on friction.
the saddle is crap (those vaders are like $10 on ebay) but the hoods and brakes look updated, and the pro 4 tires are good rubber. just looks like it needs pedals, cables, bar tape, and a saddle of your choice (and the chain of course).

I have a set of 9 speed DA bar ends I thought about putting on and running as friction, but I kind of do want ergos. 8 speed Campy RDs aren't cheap though

Now those 9s DA bar ends will run the 74xx series RDs in 8s mode, but Shimano 8s spacing is 4.8mm and Campy is 5.0mm. If you set it perfect on cog 4/5, then the max you're out is about 0.6mm-0.8mm on either end of the cogset. It's not Ergo, but it "may" solve your immediate cost issue.

Pitch is distance between the links (pivots) and is always 1/2" as Grand Bois says. By pitch, you must have meant width.
