Replacing a broken freehub (Whyte)
I have Whyte branded hubs and I've looked online to see an official replacement freehub (WHYFHUB06) is $35... Is there a way to find out if any of the unbranded freehubs would be compatible? I was wondering if Whyte just rebranded another manufacturer's hubs?
I heard a loud snap when grinding up a hill, so I assume I broke a pawl in my freehub.

You should probably figure out what is wrong before ordering parts you don't know for sure are broken.

Following the loud snapping sound, the cassette spins both ways, ie; pedalling just spins the cassette. This made me think the freehub is broken.

So you found the correct part and now you are trying to figure out if the incorrect parts will somehow work? I am confused?

Manufacturers will specify particular replacement parts (often made by themselves) when there are alternatives available. I was hoping that might be the case here, with either a cheaper or better alternative being a possibility. I am unaware of the cross compatibility of freehubs, from your answer I understand there is none at all.

I replaced it with a SRAM 406 freehub, it looked identical to the existing freehub. Apparently these Whyte hubs are rebranded Formula hubs. The freehubs screw in with an 11 mm hex fitting, the new freehub came with an 11 mm socket adapter that fits onto the end of an 8 mm allen key.
I haven't attempted a repair on the old freehub, I'll update here if I do.
