How often do you change inner tubes on your roadbike ?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've got some tubes that are at least a decade old. They're still fine, and I anticipate they will be for quite a while longer.

Never, unless I get a flat. I prefer to ride with unmatched tubes, and use patched tubes as a backup.

When I patch a tube, it gets a long leak test before going into spare tube rotation.

I would agree that sooner or later they will get stale dry rot.

I have my valet change my tubes daily; every morning, without fail. You know ... just to be on the safe side.

Oh, and ****

There could be a couple of super-anal-retentive types that would do such a thing.

If the milk in the fridge is past the date, throw out the butter too "just in case".

The OP asked about road bikes.

The "old" tubes from my primary road bike get used as spares and for other bikes tires as needed. Several of my bikes use the same tube size.

You don't need to change the tube, but you should replace the air every six months.

Tubes inside tires that are used regularly probably will last years and years. UV might make the tires go bad after a few years but tubes are fine.

Then why do all the Craigslist bikes need new "intertubes?"

I don't normally change tubes, but when I do I do it's only because of a flat.
