Used DA 7900 vs. Brand New Force 22

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Used DA 7900 vs. Brand New Force 22

I'm building up a crit bike and I have the opportunity to get either used dura ace 7900 or brand new force 22. They would be the same price. Which one would be the better option?

How used is used? SRAM's shifting action disgusts me personally -- If the 7900 was almost imperceptible from new stuff, i'd lean that direction

But --- YMMV

10 speed vs. 11
Cables subject to fraying and beaking on the DA vs. much longer lasting cables on the Force.

Get over the buttah business. It is just plain BS.

Force is the clear winner.

I like Shimano stuff, but 7900 was a bit of a dud.

Couldn't you get Ultegra 6800 for close to the Force price? Not have to mess with SRAM? I bought used 7900 and would not have if I had done more research. The shifters died pretty quickly. Found out later this is not unusual.

I think 6800 is cheaper than Force 22 from the UK sites.

Ditto. My favorite bike has DA 7900. I had DA 7800 on another bike until recently. My race bike has 105 5800. I loved the 7800 and love the 5800. 7900? Meh. The only thing keeping me from swapping the 7900 for 11 speed is the fact that I'd have several sets of 10-speed wheels and no bike for them.

There are ways around that. 11-speed bodies are available for many freehubs. Another approach is the Edco Monoblock cassette. It is pricey, but the 11-speed cassette will work on a 10-speed freehub: Cassette MONOBLOCK SHI-11S / 12-25

I was going to say... but others already beat me to the punch - 7900 was just plain horrible, why they changed up something as nice as the 7800 stuff is incomprehensible. They should've gone straight from 7800 to 9000, which is the best group set I've ever ridden.
I've never ridden the new SRAM stuff, I heard it's improved a lot from early 2000s when it wasn't so good.

Ultegra 6800 or Force 22. Can't go wrong with either. Except I'm seeing the same cable breakage with Ultegra. And SRAM's warranty service is better.

thankfully Shimano doesn't need a great warranty, because it rarely breaks.

I think the same can be said of Sram nowadays. Certainly much better than previous stuff.

Honestly, both have a warranty, both companies honor them, and often go well beyond.

Force 22 is really nice. I don't think it's as nice as Ultegra, but it's still pretty great.

I have two bikes with 7900. Never had a problem. Interesting to see it has a bad rep. But then again, I know how to touch a lady. There's a lot of bikers out there that don't know the difference between a cone wrench and a tap and die set. I think that probably explains most of the complaints.

I have had problems in the past with SRAM. Specifically disc brakes. So, not too sure about the road group-sets. The force stuff does look real clean. It would be a toss up for me if the 6800 and Force set's were the same price. Wait, no. I would go 6800. I would say go 7900, if you're handy with your hands, if you know what i mean...

Save me. The BS is getting awfully deep in here. 7900 has a widespread reputation for breaking derailleur cables inside the lever and for the removal and replacement to be difficult. Maybe that is only male bikes and the "ladies" are okay.

Don't worry. The OP didn't ask about 6800 either, but that never stops anyone here from offering an opinion.

Ah the classic, "if you have a problem it's because you're doing it wrong or are stupid" argument.

Honestly, the entire last generation of 10 speed Shimano stuff was forgettable at best. New generation is night and day better and you can get 6800 group from Ribble for under $550 right now. They have Force for $25 more if you prefer SRAM but it comes down to presence

To be clear I never had any functional issues with 7900, my only complaint, which is subjective I guess, is it wasn't as "smooth" as the 7800 stuff that came before it. Shimano corrected that problem in a major way when they released DA9000.
