Clamp on versus braze on with adapter?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Clamp on versus braze on with adapter?

Was planning to buy a braze on FD with an adapter clamp. Any disadvantage as compared to a direct clamp on FD? It's a bit cheaper but more important I can later use the same FD on a braze on frame if need be. So, any reason not to do this?

This is for a Force 22.

I think the popular opinion is braze on because as you said you can use it if you swap to a frame with braze on. There is no disadvantage to using the adapter.

IME it works just fine and as you pointed out, if you decide to move your group to a frame with a braze on you can just remove the clamp and install.

Another bonus of the adapter is that you can get them in the correct size for your seat tube, some band on FDs require using ugly plastic shims.

Braze on with adapter is the smart choice. Another reason is that it is more easily height adjustable without moving the whole band and exposing some marking on the frame should you change chain rings size, etc.

Won't it require a special spacer if one does that? I bought a used braze on front with the clamp and had to buy one of these separately on ebay.

The fixing screw and special washer as pictured above are supplied with each new braze-on derailleur.

On this topic. Anyone know the correct part for a braze on FD-9000 to adapt it to clamp on?

There are a lot of adapters. You need to know the diameter of your seat tube where it will clamp on

The adapter does not have to be Shimano brand. Nice ones are available on ebay and Amazon as well as many other online stores. They come in aluminum and carbon fiber for not much money.
