My 3 vintage bikes..
My 3 vintage Raleigh Competitions..
I will admit, I am a newbie at this, but in the short time of 4 to 5 months, the addiction has set in, and I have aquired and nice little stable of Raleighs. Two 1978 Raleigh Competion GSs, and one 1985 Raleigh Competition. I missed out on cherry 1985 Prestige Frame which would have put me in Vintage Heaven if I had got that..
Mind you now, they are not as clean as the bikes I see on these pages, and I can't turn a wrench not even in the littlest way. I rely on the LBS for my work.
The two black ones are 1978 Raleigh Competition GSs, and the pearl white one is the 1985. I crashed on the tall (62cm) bike, and was lucky that just the wheels got messed up. I got a set of wheels of CL for $60 and put them on.

Vintage mid-to-high-end Raleighs are a great way to jumpstart your participation in this hobby.

Beautiful bikes. This is the perfect time to learn to wrench a little on the bikes. I was the same way a couple of years ago when I ventured into the C&V world by mistake. In that short time I've learned a lot - at least enough to build up a bike this past spring. I still don't do my own wheel work (that will happen at some point). Reading through the posts here and going through bicycle repair books were invaluable.

Nice rides! I am smitten with the white USA one. Now all you need to remember is to include pics of the drive side of the bikes.
Wrenching on C&V bikes aren't hard. After getting a few essential tools, all the know how is available a click away.

IMO, the white competition is the sweetest.. It feels more responsive, and it is a perfect fit.. I am looking to bag another one or a Prestige of heaven forbid a Raleigh Profession. BTW, I ride all three. I commute back and forth to work, and short rides with the wiffee.. Got yet to do my first group ride... Such is the way of a newbie!!

very nice collection of comps! you must be pretty tall to have the seat post raised so high on the 25" one.

I am tall, but not that tall. I had just picked the 25 one up from the LBS. They put new bar wrap, hoods, tires. I had brought the bike back from buying it on the train. I had to take off the pedals, turn the handbars in, and I lowered the seat. The mechanic at the LBS must have been very tall. I will lowered the seat and the stem..

Hi cehowardGS - Take the advice and bone up on bike maintenance - the Park Tool website has as much basic information as you might need to get started - Also you will find some very useful supplemental information HERE on RandyJawas site and on Sheldon Brown's site
The initial investment in specialized tools is pretty minimal (compared to bike shop service) and will pay for itself many times over.
PS - great Raleighs!

I fricking love Raleighs...If it was up to me, every bike in my stable would be a Raleigh, or Raleigh-built bike.

However, I am fumble-finger-joe when it comes to wrenching. I went through many a race seasons on motorcycles, and never turned a wrench, just rode. Going to get me a good set of allen wrenches as a start...
Thanks again, tips and compliments..

cehowardGS: I have a vintage Raleigh Prestige available. Near mint, almost 100% original. Identical to the one shown in the 1985 Raleigh USA bike catalog. Let me know if you might be interested in it.

Three very nice machines! I see you like to wheelset upgrade haha, whats the model number for the shimano wheels on the white competition? They actually look kinda nice on the bike. However, If they are the wheels im thinking they quite crummy from what I remember, I had a set of those a few years back in black.

In the meantime, like the guy falling off a 100 story building, and at each window he passes somebody asks him, how is he doing? His reply is, "so far so good"...Ditto for that wheelset!!

Beautiful.
I had a Raleigh 3 speed when I was about 12, started serious riding in the early 70s on a second hand Raleigh Grand Prix and have had a soft spot for all things Raleigh ever since.
