Craigslist seller claims frame not crashed, could that be true?
Seller posted this ad earlier today. Another individual posted a mock ad telling people not to buy the bike because it had been crashed. I've never seen a fork that looked bent like this from the factory. Who's correct?

I've never seen a fork like that. Haven't been into the C&V thing as long as these other guys, but I'm telling you right now Raleigh did not have any unique signature build of a fork on their bikes. A fork is a fork, plain and simple.
For $70 though, you might be able to get away with buying a new fork granted the rest of the frame is sound. Talk him down to $40 on the insistence you're not stupid, but want a project bike to work on.

Very bent! The seller is rude and wrong! Not to mention the frame is a lower end one AND the horrible spray job on it. He sprayed the headset cups AND the lower fork race! You couldn't pay me to take that bike.

I will say this....it WOULD be odd for it to bend perfectly identical in a crash, wouldn't it? I mean there are plenty of other things to hate about the bike but...

Pastor Bob has an old Schwinn with forks that were bent this perfectly. They were so perfectly bent that we all had a hard time accepting that they were in fact bent.

Heh...the only thing he said was "it has not been wrecked" Might even be true. Still doesn't mean the fork isn't bent, because it most certainly IS bent, and I seriously doubt Raleigh made a fork like that. In addition to the aforementioned spray paint job it's pretty plain that the CL seller is just a **** who's in denial.

I'm wondering if the seller heated the fork legs red-hot then pulled them out of line by hand. Then spraybombed it and the rest of the bike after it cooled down. Makes sense to me, what about you folks?

No way is that bike worth $70 in such a state. Buying a fork for it would be throwing good money after bad.

I've certainly never seen one like that in 20+ years of looking at old bikes. I think it all depends upon one's definition of "crashed". If running the bike into a wall does not count as "crashed" by your definition, this bike is not crashed. "Artistically bent" perhaps. Maybe the Geniuses at the Nottingham factory decided they would build a curly stays Hetchins... in reverse.

I have to admit that I have run across two bikes with the same front fork configuration, an early seventies Legnano and an Iverson. The forks were perfectly even in the bends and one could easily believe that they were intended to be that way.
I did not have a chance to talk to the Iverson (low end Japanese bicycle) but the fellow with the Legnano was adamant that the forks were not bent.
I, personally, do not believe the Legnano guy. My opinion is that the forks are badly bent and beyond reasonable repair.
