Cycling 3/4-Shorts?
Hello,
Do any of you cycle with non-padded, non-Spandex 3/4-Shorts, a.k.a. cycling knickers? If so, would you recommend them? Or are they considered for "hipsters" only? I was considering purchasing a pair. They seem practical for cooler months for the type of riding I do (slow pace road bike rides of 50-100 miles, easy MTB trails, utility urban cycling.) But I don't see many cyclists here in Southern California wearing them. I have medium weight thermal cycling pants but they get too hot during climbs, even on 40 degree mornings. Also they are kind of bulky to stow if I take them off mid-ride. I have basic Performance Bike knee warmers but have to constantly tug them up while pedaling. I was looking at the Zoic Reign and the Aerotech "Pedal Pushers" as they are relatively affordable. REI has house-brand pair that customers rate highly but they only are available in a strange brown color. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Prana makes some nice looong shorts that hit at about the knee, and they can sometimes be found at REI. Also this.

As it happens, I was in an REI last week and checked those out. I didn't even bother going into the dressing room to try them on - they were hideous, and I don't mean just the color.

Thanks for the tips! I like the look of the Rene Herse but they might be out of my (more precisely, my wife's) price range--will look into it. I will also check into Prana offerings. Thanks again!

Or, take your hiking pants to the cleaners where they do alterations & have them cut off & velcro closure added.

I wear normal road shorts under my thermal pants. For 3/4 shorts, I would probably just wear a separate padded liner.
Thanks to everyone for the inputs. I'm glad I joined these forums so I can pick up tips and get new ideas from all of you.

If I could find some good 3/4 padded shorts, I could use them for long cycling trousers, as they would likely come right to my ankles.

I have a pair of the ATD pedal pushers. They're very comfortable. I might get another pair this spring.

Thanks!
Thanks again everyone. I wore the DIY pair over a padded liner today on a 72 mile ride on rolling suburban roads. Temperature ranged from about 50 to 60 degrees F. The shorts worked out well. Kept my knees warm on descents but didn't cause me to śweat on climbs. I'll continue using them but look into the store-bought suggestions from everyone when it's time to replace my road shorts. At my riding speeds, aero isn't much of a concern and I think I now like the looser fit and 3/4 length better. (At least for cool weather non-club rides.)
