My '76 Raleigh Pro 650b Conversion / Touring / Rando Bike

This Raleigh has had several forms over the last decade, including a tubular-clad racing bike, long distance touring rig (Portland->SF in 2016), and mixed-terrain 650b randonneuring bike.

I was asked on here about the 650b conversion. It's worked out pretty well. The long reach Weinmann brakes give enough reach, and with new Kool Stop pads they work adequately. Fits 38s and fenders.

Last semester I added dynamo lights and stainless steel fenders. Today I'm taking it apart again to install wider, lighter aluminum VO fenders and a new titanium bottom bracket. I also plan to switch to flat pedals, a titanium seat post, and clean up the dynamo wire routing.

Thought some of you might enjoy. Happy to answer any questions about the build.

First pictures are from my tour. Packed light!





These show the bike as it stands today. I'm not removing those hoods until they completely fall apart!

That is one sweet rig.

What are you using for lighting? Out of curiosity, why a titanium bb?

Thanks! I'm using Bausch & Muller lighting. IQ-X in the front, Secula Plus in the rear. I love them.

I'm changing the bottom bracket because the NR that I'm using is too short for the crankset, and the Ti bottom bracket is an easy, cheap and invisible way to lose 1/3 of a pound.

Sweet looking Professional. I really like the fork, especially the chrome top. Looking at it with 650b wheels, the seat stays appear longer (wheel further from seat tube), do you think the smaller wheels change the handling to be more touring bike like? How do you plan to clean up the dynamo wires? Does yours have bottom bracket cut outs?

Thank you! I also love the look of the frameset. The rear wheel is at far the end of the dropouts with the 650 build, and I imagine that does make it feel a bit more like a touring bike. One reason this bike has taken all these different forms is that it's always handled a bit "slow" compared to what I was used to, and prefer, especially for faster road rides. With the 650 conversion it's significantly more fun for all riding, including the faster stuff.

There are "C C" cutouts in the bottom bracket. I'm not sure exactly how I'll clean up the wiring yet. There is a small chance that I'll drill a tiny hole in the downtube.

That Jim Merz story is actually part of the reason I decided that I could tour on this, without buying a special touring bike!

The yoke cable on the front brake is huge. A shorter one will probably help braking.
