I don't understand why...

...People don't have their credit cards ready when they get to the counter. The worst example is getting gas at Costco. You need both your membership card and CC in order to pump gas. Wouldn't you think you'd have them both pulled out and ready when your turn comes around? Why are you fumbling in your wallet or purse as you stand in front of the pump?

Feel free to add you own "I don't understand why..." below.

Anywhere there is a queue to pay for something... I have to agree with you. It's as if some folks are suddenly surprised they actually have to pay... and THEN go digging around for their method of payment.

It's one thing to fumble for exact change... tax and fees can change a final price; but it is quite another to clearly not be ready to pay.

My wife is especially bad with this... keeping her few credit cards first in some random location in her purse, and second, putting her cards in a stack with library cards, discount cards, DL, medical cards... what have you... she does this "deck shuffle" every time she buys something.

The really ironic thing is "cleans her purse" from time to time and takes things out that she needs... "oh, I took out my costco card... 'cause I haven't used it in a month..." SIGH

The answer is simple: many people live inside their own universe, a bubble in which other people do not exist. It's not so much that they're being inconsiderate as they don't even recognize that you exist at all. Anyone in front of them is an impediment, anyone behind them... isn't there.

I see it in checkout lines, driving in traffic, virtually anywhere. There's nothing malicious there, nothing intentional, nothing deliberate. Some people are just terrible, and we have to live with them.

I have fruitlessly yelled through my windshield, on many occasions, some variant of this: "It would be great if you could just for a minute, pretend you're not the only person on earth!" Even if they could hear me, nothing would change.

The worst is when you're at the grocery store and the person forgot something and ask that the bag boy go and get it for them when there is a line of 8 people waiting to get out of the store. And to heap on even further... they guy brings back what they wanted and then they say "Oh, sorry, I wanted the other size box".

I will admit that since I retired these things don't bother me quite as much. My take on it is from the standpoint of people not considering or even caring about the others behind them. It doesn't take anything to be considerate.

IKR. At some point payment is going to be expected. That is the essence of a sale. How can one forget that fact? I have my card or cash at the ready.

...people try to get on the elevator on the ground floor before letting people off.

...people block access the elevator because they are too busy with their faces in their phones.

Both these things happen in my building every day. Let passengers exit before you try to enter, and for the love of Pete, when the damn door opens on the ground floor, have your head up and exit the car.

Some folks don't handle multiple stimuli well. To them, a typical store can seem like the sensory equivalent to standing in front of a stack of amps at a 1975 Led Zeppelin concert while trying to do the NYT crossword and carrying on a conversation with a very attractive person with horrible breath. From that perspective it's difficult to think of more than one thing at a time.

It gets worse with age for some people. Prepare yourselves and hope you have patient family, friends, neighbors, store clerks and emergency responders.

Huh. The grocery store never charges me, because I'm so handsome. The rest of you don't get that benefit?

Hmmm. Maybe I'd better shave the beard after all.

But heck, at least they stopped carding me.

I don't understand why people who don't have any particular place to go, no pressing appointment and no clue just don't get out of the way.

When I go to costco, I arrange my basket so everything is barcode up, put like one thing on the belt just because if I don't use a divider it confuses things, and the checker can scangun the whole cart bip bip bip in just a few seconds, and I'm out of there.

I get a lot of compliments from the checkers about how great that is. I wish Costco would set up a speed line with that requirement. For that line, the assistant checker is not needed to box, etc, they can police the line, make sure people's carts are ready.

You must love getting stuck behind the old lady who wants to haggle with the cashier about how much each item should cost.

I've never quite understood why people bother taking elevator down. You have to wait for it to show up, then wait as people get on and off at different floors...

Usually there are stairs nearby, why not let gravity just assist you... walk down.

Why do people see you coming then at the last minute move into your path thinking they're moving out of the way. If someone is moving forward simply plot a course to their rear since they're moving away you can never collide. Don't try and outrun them across their path like a cockroach that ends up getting stepped on.

I had a "polite off" the other day while jogging. A fella was approaching me walking a dog on the side walk so I hopped into the grass. I was watching my footing only to glance up and see that he had gotten off the sidewalk as well, directly in front of me

... Walmart refuses to sell me a six pack of craft beer on a Sunday evening because my wife forgot her ID. I always put it as the last item to be rang up just in case.

It was the last item after the $100 order that included three days worth of meals, and diapers for my son who was with us. But yes, I suppose one of us could be underage, looking to get wasted off of a $9 sixer. Oh how I desperately wish that was the case!
