Today, after a long search, I found Dad's "Book". The book is Dad's frame numbering system from 1975 when we moved to the UK through July 1992. He had a page for Sandy Gilchrist, Sid Barris and Ottadini frames. If you have a frame with a bottom bracket number in the 55##, Dad made it.

This tandem was very early on in Dad's time in the USA. I can tell you when it was made if you post the BB number.
Dad was taught by Jack Taylor and his brothers how to make bikes. So the nod to Jack Taylor is fitting for this early tandem from the 1970's.

I haven't found any promising leads on Buds or Leach in looking through old race and ride results, but maybe I will yet find something.
It's interesting, the original fork is quite short, almost like it was built for a smaller wheel size. The biggest 700c tire it could fit in the original fork was a 700x28, and that without fenders. And the bottom brackets are very high. But I put a 650b wheel in and it was too small for the cantilever brakes to work. Is there a chance it could have been built for some wheel size other than 700c?

selaing Is there anything you can tell me about this beauty? No serial number that I can find. The PO had bought it as a used frame ~30-40yrs ago in CA.

Without a frame number, this was probably made in the early 1975-76 when Dad moved to Tucson AZ. Would have used old decals until made new ones with Tucson on them.

Its 5081 serial number. Cant upload a photo yet. Yellow paint with tuson decals. Lowtrail fork and strange brake mounts. Curious when it was built and how it was built up im guessing as rando or a townie?

My friend found this old frame at a thrift store. 5081 is the serial number stamped on the bb. Curious how it was built up. Im guessing it would have been a rando or a townie. The frame needs a lot of work gonna strip it and check for rust and cracks and braze standard brake bosses on it."

Wow!!!! That frame is one of the first ones made in the USA. Made in summer of 1975. Only information in "The Book" is:
23 3/4 Cleveland.
Model named after the county we were from in England.
It would have been a touring bike with 27" wheels.
I would need to see brake bosses you are talking about. Brakes in those days were Mafac, Universal, Campagnolo.....

My (circa) 1989 Colian
This was originally built up with Dura Ace. It's now a freewheel single for short rides around town. I may one day restore it to it's original spec and put the original fork back on. (as soon as I'm allowed, I'll post a photo)

Here is a Colian some friends of mine came across. It's in pretty rough shape, but it would be really interesting to find out some background on it. selaing any info on this one? Looks like number 2862 built for a Johnson. I imagine the Masi fork is not original.

I am going on a limb with the above frame. Dad made a few bikes for a Canadian Maurice Johnson. My gut says, since the bottom bracket number is NOT part of Dad's book. This is a frame NOT made by Colin Laing. Maurice could have wanted a repaint back in those days and said just put your stickers on it. Thus why you are also seeing a chrome Masi fork.
Dad would not have put that type of cable guide on the bottom bracket.

Thank you so much for digging into this one Stuart. Unfortunate that it is not built by Colin Laing, but very interesting to know that it likely belonged to Maurice Johnson, an esteemed figure in our local cycling community.
