Broadway Loop

This morning I rode a loop to Rio Salado, then on Broadway Rd from 19th Ave to 75th Ave. Then home. Temps were in the low 70s when I started and the high 80s at the end. Pix are here.

The map is here.

I started out riding to McDs at 7th Ave & Indian School Rd for breakfast. Then to Quik Trip at 3rd Ave for a bottle of tea. Then south on 3rd Ave. The cactus by St. Joseph's Hospital was blooming.

From there get on 5th Ave and head south. I wandered off the regular track at Fillmore. Going thru downtown at 2nd Ave. Started to cross the RR tracks along 1st but heard a train. Thinking there might be a good train shot coming I waited for a few minutes. When the train didn't show I went looking for it. It was jockeying cars between 7th St & 16th St and didn't appear to be going anywhere. So on south on 7th St.

On the south side of the river there is a parking lot on the left. Turn in there to get on the South Overbank Trail. Then head east. I didn't see a single burrowing owl. I was looking. Lots of habitats. Maybe this isn't their season.

Cross under 16th St and take the fork that climbs back up to the west. There are some stone picnic tables here.

We're going to cross to the north side of the river and get on the North Overbank Trail. Then head west. There are some more burrowing owl habitats west of 7th Ave on the north side. But no owls. Did stop for a photo.

The trail ends at 19th Ave. Turn south on 19th Ave. Then west at Broadway Rd. There is a bicycle lane on Broadway here. It takes you from 19th Ave to 51st Ave. Most of it was closed due to construction. Broadway was busy enough I rode the sidewalk most of the way.

I chose Broadway Rd along this section to check out the bike lane. Not sure how long it has been here. This is probably too busy for my tastes during normal business hours. There are lots of quarries, salvage yards, and auto specialists. I did find a nice mural.

At 51st Ave you have to cross to the north side of the river to continue west on Broadway. Just west of 59th Ave is the new freeway being constructed.

Broadway Rd west of 51st didn't have a bike lane. The paved shoulder was too narrow. There were a few sidewalks. Mostly I rode on the gravel along the road. It was reasonably smooth.

At 75th Ave I turned north. Stopped at Sweet Cream Donuts at Lower Buckeye Rd. The apple fritter was fresh. Then back on 75th Ave north.

At the RR tracks the track light was yellow. They are always red or green. I didn't even know they could show yellow.

After crossing I10 you soon cross McDowell Rd. I turned into the neighborhood at the first opportunity. Then worked my way to Encanto Blvd. Then west.

At Desert West Park on the east side of 67th Ave I cut thru the park to get to 63rd Ave. I wanted to check out the murals near 59th Ave & Thomas. Taggers had messed them up with graffiti. At the Grand Canal turn east.

From there this ride is mostly the normal ride home along the Grand Canal. The only deviation was at 47th Ave. Turning north to Circle K for a cold bottle of water. Then looking at some of the murals along Indian School Rd. Did get some shots back in the neighborhood.

Then back to the regular Grand Canal ride home.

37.8 mi
3 hrs 12 min riding time
6 hrs total time
Note: forgot to change activity type in Strava. It showed the whole ride as a hike for a while. It's fixed now.
