water bottles that don't make their contents taste like poop?

The missus is pretty underwhelmed by any/every water bottle she's tried, claims that they all make their contents taste like poop. Me, I have no sense of taste so I just use the Camelback Podium Chill model. But she's wondering if there's anything out there that's conspicuously better. Anybody?

I switched to stainless steel bottles. They make a big difference.

Try using filtered water. I have a set of water bottles that have never seen anything except filtered water. They are ordinary bike shop bottles, no detectable flavor, but then the water is filtered. I can't drink most tap water because it tastes so awful. We have a ledge faucet connected to under-sink purification which takes out chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, etc. I have a separate set for putting in additives. Those bottles always have a taste, even with filtered water.

I use Gatorade 24-oz bottles with the sipper-type tops as water bottles. No flavor at all, and they come free with every purchase of 24 oz. of Gatorade. The earlier version would last about a year before starting to leak, but the latest version seems to be made of slightly thicker plastic and should be more durable.

My bottles are: a couple from REI and one from Nuun, each a relatively thick but soft plastic. They work for me, briefly wash and dry post ride (no dishwasher) - but I'm not riding in high temperatures and my liquid is lightly flavored, de-chlorinated tap water.

Tell her it's medicine for cycling. Medicine isn't supposed to taste good. Is it?

I assume this is with plain water that she is complaining of the taste? If anything else that has a sweet taste already to it, then I've always had to dilute it when riding. Partly because it seemed like cycling hard magnified the taste of anything. And if it had even the hint of a syrupy taste when not riding, then it was almost undrinkable for me when riding.

New bike bottles frequently do have a taste to them. I'll use 24 oz drink bottles from the convenience store and just put my own mix in them. Some fit my bottle cages very well.

Net take-a-way is that for some of us, taste seems to change while exercising.

While I don't have any direct experience knowing what poop tastes like I can say that my wife likes those little packets of drink mix like Gator-ade and Propel (and others) make. I think they are sized for 16-oz bottles -- I don't pay too much attention as I just take luke-warm tap water, much to her disbelief.

I use electrolytes and fruity creatine powder mix in every bottle anyway, so it all overpowers any plasticky taste and odor. And it's impossible to completely remove that odor.

If I drank only plain water and wanted no flavor or odor, I'd probably get a stainless steel thermos or possibly an old school thermos with glass liner.

But I'm not that picky. City tap water tastes fine to me. My cats are pickier. They always seem to want to drink out of my glass instead of their dish. Same water.

I'm ok trading off a little plasticky taste if it means my drink stays colder longer. That said, I also use a Camelblack Podium Insulated. The other good feature is the one-way valve.
If an insulated stainless bottle could be had with a one-way valve, I'd pick one up.

I couldn't tell you which bottles I am using at this point in time, but I have long de-pooped my bottles by dropping a tablet of fizzing denture cleaner into a full bottle and letting it sit overnight. In the morning, no more poop!

(By the way, my bottles have NEVER tasted like poop.)

I have to say that I used to raise turkeys, and a couple of decades ago, I had a flock of turkeys that were diagnosed with coronavirus. Not sure if I got sick; I tended to work every day regardless, no matter how I felt. These days, I can't remember if or when I could smell or taste much of anything. Gasoline maybe, or dead animals. Nowadays, I drink water through a reverse osmosis system and when I don't, the water tastes dirty. Water bottles aren't a pollution source that I can discern.

@Bob Ross Try the Specialized Purist line of water bottles. They have a coating inside to prevent making everything in the bottle from tasting like plastic. I also love their "heart-valve" spouts ("Watergate" or "Fixy" spouts). As an added bonus, apparently they're made in California (USA!) I haven't found a better water bottle and have no idea why so few people seem to know about these bottles.

My older Reduce brand Cold One stainless thermos is a standard water bottle shape, fits my bike cages and will accept a water bottle lid with CamelBak or Polar type spout. It's heavy but sure keeps cold stuff cold and hot stuff hot. I've taken it along on rides in freezing weather and above 100F.

Unfortunately Reduce discontinued that model and I don't see anything comparable now on their catalog. Wish I'd bought more of 'em. Kroger was blowing 'em out for $4 about three years ago and I bought only one. At the time I didn't realize that model would accept standard bike bottle lids.

I've never tasted poop, so I can't be sure (am I really missing something? ), but I don't notice any taste with Camelback "Podium" bottles. @noglider's suggestion for stainless steel bottles is also good, but I like to squeeze the bottle to facilitate flow rate; never had any luck squeezing a steel bottle. I should work on my grip strength… And I found the steel bottle would make an annoying rattle on rough roads.

@JohnDThompson, you don't have to squeeze. The bottle has a special valve in the nozzle that lets water out and air in while you suck.

Tom: Which stainless steel bottles do you use? Every time I replace my bottles, I vow to switch to stainless and, for some reason, I never do. I think it's because the stores carry so few of them and the salespeople know so little about them.

Steel or titanium - no other material cuts it.
I use two depending on season: A klean kanteen vacuum bottle and another klean kanteen single-wall. Both with flip lids (I'm not a sipper, I like to gulp).

In the summer, I do carry a softish bike bottle, but it is solely used for wetting my hat and back to cool down.

My spouse and I have several made by Klean Kanteen, and we like them a lot. We used an off-brand one, and it's rusting inside so I guess the name brand ones are better. You can get them in many places as well as Amazon.
